Grimm's Grimmest (Illustrated by Tracy Arah Dockray, Introduction by Maria Tatar)
The Grimm brothers couldn't have been more aptly named. Until Disney and other interests started letting the children live in their re-tellings, many versions of these often-familiar folk tales ended in death, dismembering, and misery.
First paragraph (from "The Juniper Tree"):
A LONG TIME AGO there was a rich man who had a beautiful and pious wife. They loved each other dearly, but had no children, though they wished for them very much. The woman prayed for them day and night, but still they had none.
Of course the woman eventually has a child, but she dies at his birth. Then he's beheaded by his stepmother, and turns into a bird who crushes the stepmother with a millstone.
I knew of some of these tales, such as "Aschenputtel," and others are new to me. This edition (at 200mm x 250mm) has seen a bit of use, but is holding together very well. Nice binding and cover. Maybe I can sell it.
Thanks
