On Friday I went to Jones Hall and saw Baiba Skride play Mendehlsonn. Her breathtaking performance was even more impressive when I learned that she is still a student. I have observed this spark of genius within the young in literature as well (after all, Tennyson's infamous In Memoriam was written when he was barely in his early 20s ) and have wondered at the brilliancy, and the reason, for these rare gems. I think it may have to do with the state of being of youth.. that bright-eyed earnestness of purpose, the energy, the constant ebb and flow of emotions that could be conducive to creative genius. On the other hand, however, it is known in the music world that more emotion and thus better playing is a byproduct of age and experience, and this can be seen paralleled in the mature work and philosophy of other writers such as Frost, which is more jaded but just as brilliant. Maybe, like the nature of creativity itself genius can not be predicted or expected as the result of some artistic algorithm.
Maybe i'm just jealous and therefore over-analytical!
