I needed new lenses for my glasses, so I decided to try a new shop that has opened up near work. Normally I wouldn't bother as South Yarra is not exactly a cheap location. Well blow me down, not only were new lenses just $110 (I had been quoted $160 in Forest Hill) but they had my prescription in stock and could do them in 30 minutes. So I left my glasses with them and headed off to kill 30 minutes.
Fortunately I had my prescription sunglasses, so I was able to do things that involve seeing in focus. There is a "remainders" bookshop near Prahran Town Hall that I hadn't visited in a while so I decided to have a look. It has a lot of trade paperbacks, mostly for $5 each. Last time I bought a Liz Williams' "Banner of Souls" and Neil Asher's "Cowl" and enjoyed them both, so I picked up Williams' "Nine Layers of Sky" and Asher's "Brass Man" along with China Meiville's "Looking For Jake", all of which were $5 each. They also had "Iron Council" for $5 but unfortunately I already had that one (and paid full price for it).
Other titles there: Sean McMullen - "Glass Dragons", KJ Bishop - "The Etched City", "The Making of HHGTG"(the movie), four different Juliet Marillier books, John Birmingham's "Weapons of Choice". They also had "Black Box" by Janice Witham who lived across the road from Trudi. That one is about the development of the Black Box flight recorder, invented by an Australian and then ignored by the government.
By the time I had thoroughly browsed the shop my glasses were ready, so I wandered back to pick them up. No dramas there, absoultely excellent service (www.caleyewear.com) 155 Toorak Rd.
