So let me fill you in on the glam details of my weekend. This was an extended weekend at that, because the administration at UK graciously gave us the gift of a "Fall Break," entailing one ENTIRE day of rest and relaxtion. Thanks you guys, you're too much!!
On Friday afternoon I went to Keeneland for the first time in a coon's age with the Cosmo Club. I had a good time, even though I lost about $15 on horses named Vanilla Sky and Ghostman, among others. I knew when I saw the horse Susan's Song I should put some money down on it, but I didn't. And of course, it ran to glory. I really enjoyed the atmosphere though. Aside from a little rain/mist, it was rather pleasant. I think I spent more money on food than races. For the record, Keeneland could have the best bread pudding I've ever eaten.
Friday night I worked as a ball boy for the men's soccer game against Tulsa. Basically if the ball goes out of bounds, I relinquish the one I have and go chase the other. I had the priviledge of working the sideline between the benches. When I signed up, I didn't know there would be the added bonus of being stuck between two coaches letting each other have it verbally. I've never heard so many curse words spewed in such a short amount of time! What makes matters even more laughable is that both the UK and Tulsa coaches are Brits. They must just cuss differently over there cause I heard some new combinations of words that I couldn't help but laugh. For the sake of those reading, I won't print them here, but if you ask me I might just tell you. The highlight of the evening was when a Tulsa assistant (and obviously American) called UK's coach a "wanker". I'm sorry.....wanker?! But it did my heart good to know that this guy had reached out across cultural lines and found a word that is near and dear to the Brits and chastised him with it. But seriously, dude, if there was anything that ever screamed "wannabe", that was it.
Saturday morning I got up at 6:45 to go punish my body. Laura and I raced in the Asbury Adventure Race and it was a ton of fun! A quick rundown of the race: 2 mile run, 1.5 mile canoe, 1 mile run, high ropes course, low ropes course, 5 mile mountain bike. We were pretty much in over our heads. For starters, we weren't wearing any spandex, which appeared to be a staple for most racers. Secondly, our bikes hadn't cost over $75 and weren't made of titanium. Needless to say, we were underprepared. We fared pretty poorly overall, I think we got beat by some 12 year olds and a elderly couple both of which were pushing walkers. If you want a better rundown, look at Laura's blog.
That was my weekend, more or less. And today I'm pretty sore. The end.
