Last night was one of the truly memorable experiences in my college career. Discarding all conventional activities, as well as anything that could even be remotely associated with "cool," we found a wicked sweet game of Bingo at the local American Legion.
It started out pretty rough, though. We got there late, interrupting the game and we staggered to the front trying to buy boards. Who knew it would be that complicated? It ended up costing about $12 for a packet of boards, which we in turn split (Me/Laura & Susan/Megan) that which apparently was against Ky. Law. Oh, well.
So they stopped the whole game until these young, ignorant college kids got settled. It's kinda unnerving to have ever eye in the place looking at you in disgust. We found our way to a table and I positioned myself next to a nice little old lady named Ramona. She helped us out a lot, for it is much more complicated that making straight or diagonal lines, you can win with "postage stamps", "little T's", or with big or small diamonds. We were so out of place, confused and otherwise rowdy for the first 15 minutes until we figured out just what in the heck we were doing.
Once we got in the flow we started noticing the quirks of this place. It looks like a seedy bar that doubles as a Bingo hall. The cigarette smoke permeated our clothes, we weren't sure if they loved us or hated us, and we couldn't figure out why this guy kept walking around and yelling "Speedy!".
All was fine by the end of the night. Laura and I won $10 each, and Suz and Megan were the big winners, with $25 each. Call it beginners luck, but they've got us hooked. I believe they (the Bingo regulars) enjoyed the youth and vigor we brought to the game. So if you had wanted to ask me out on a date next Friday night, don't bother....I've got a date with Ramona.
