Classes are over for me for Thanksgiving. No more nothing until next week. Or at least late Sunday night. But since I ride with Poorna to campus, I needed to wait on her, because her classes aren't cancelled like mine were. Chalk it up to the major. Anyway, while I was trying to kill my four hours, I decided to go nestle myself into a cozy little corner of a computer lab in the MLK Library. I found the perfect spot, and there were only 2 people in the room. Perfect.
I sat down and began going about my business. Checking my fantasy team, facebook, email (on a side note, I'm really excited about the idea of geocaching, ask if you wanna know!), you know, the norm. I put on some headphones and started listening to some soft rock. A few people trickled in. I did my Spanish homework (that isn't due until next week), read some stuff on the game last night, wrote dad an email. A couple more people came in here and there. Let's be honest, the lab is pretty big. Why are so many people deciding to come into this particular room?
I got out my checkbook. I wrote some checks to pay the cable bill and my property tax. Facebooked again. About half this small room is full at this point, and I just can't figure it out. I mean, come on people, it's about 1:40pm on Thankgiving week. Find someplace else! About 10 minutes later, the entire lab was full of people. I checked outside in the main lab and there was no one out there. The room was getty stuffy and I was getting hot. I stood up to stretch my legs and a guy across the room, who didn't have a computer, just a seat watched me intently. There was a certain sinking feeling in his eyes when I sat back down, like I had just crushed his dreams. I put my headphones back on and proceeded to check my email again. I think I might have been singing out loud, but ever so soft "Look at this photograph/Every time I do it makes me laugh/How did our eyes get so red?/And what the hell is on Joey’s head?"
A guy came in the room, I only glanced at him and couldn't figure out why, for the love of all things sacred more people decided to come in. He surveyed the room and proceeded to put his things down. I went back to my computer and began researching adventure tourism in Siberia (no, really).
At about 2:02 I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see the guy who last came in looking at me. My first thought was, "No, dude, I'm not going to give you my computer. There are plenty out there for you to use. And why in the heck are all these people in here anyway??!"
I took off my headphones and he said "Are you in this class?"
Redfaced, I shoveled up my things, yanked the headphones out of the CPU and began to head towards the door. The guy whose dreams I shattered earlier quickly stood up and went to my seat. The entire class was staring at me and I waddled toward the door, headphones cord scraping the floor. From the crowd I heard "Taking up seats, aren't ya Patrick?" I'm actually surprised they didn't applaud as I left.
