Well, I put all four against one wall as you folk suggested, and my fear that that side of the room would LOOM over the living room was proved to be unfounded. Getting the Earthquake bolts in the top to help stabilize them vertically has been much harder than stabilizing them horizontally, but it's done. At least as far as I can tell!
Annoying detail -- three of the four made the move with their little shelf supports already in place, so it's been easy to put the shelves in. The fourth has no supports, and I can't find them, so I'm going to have to go buy more. In the meantime I've put two boxes of books in the bottom to stabilize it some and bolted it into the wall on top, and I'll move the rest of the boxes of books into my bedroom to await being unpacked into those bookshelves.
ETA: In opening boxes to see what should go where, I have discovered that I have 5 boxes of DVDs and 3 boxes of CDs. And a box of Video tapes. I had no idea. None. Whew!
The TV console
sichling sold me for the apartment is lovely in that it has storage space for all sorts of things -- books, DVDs, CDs, gadgets, art bits, and so on. Hoorah!
Grumpiness for the day: I can't find the TV controller, and the channel it seems to be stuck on is some Christan worship network. Argh!
