I'm not sure I understand all of this.
Let's face it. My house is not big enough for the "X + 1" litter box rule. According to the cat care sites, that's the optimum number of cat boxes you need. Since I have 3 indoor cats, I'd need 4 boxes. I have 2. I don't have a clue where I'd put more, frankly. I have two rooms that need to stay cat free. And I'm not putting them on a carpeted floor.
I used to have one in each bathroom. That way I could occasionally close my bedroom door and the cats would still have a box.
However, Drake was riding herd on that one, and not letting Strider in that box, but he was guarding the other one, too. Groan. We had way too many accidents, most of them from Strider not being able to get to a box.
When I had my party in July, I just moved both boxes into my bathroom. It's much bigger, and let us allow the guests to use the bathroom without being confronted by the litter box.
The cats seemed to like that pretty well. I put one in my shower (it's just a stall, no tub) and one on the floor outside, and there weren't any fights or accidents. I left it that for a couple of weeks, sharing the shower in Duncan's bathroom.
We tried moving both boxes onto the floor in my bathroom, clearing my shower. Oops! Struggle again. BIG struggles. Chasing up and down the hall and little tufts of fur struggles.
I moved the second box back in my shower, and things settled back down. Is it because they can't see the other box? don't have to pee next to one another?
Any thoughts? We like having one bathroom with no boxes, especially when friends come to visit.
