Supernatural: Beware the Siren's Song

This week's episode was full of layers of meaning for our beloved Winchester brothers and I'm not sure my recap will do it justice, but I'll try.

Last night’s episode of Supernatural may not be going onto my favorites list immediately, the way “After School Special” did, but it did have it’s good points and of course Bobby is always a welcome sight. Also, I can already feel that the events in this episode have started a ripple effect that will continue down through the rest of the season. The seeds have been sown. As much as I don’t like it, I have a feeling we’re heading for a confrontation between my favorite two brothers.

I apologize if this recap is a little random or rambly (or both). My thoughts are still a little scattered but I have a busy weekend so if I don’t post now it might not happen.

Last night the boys investigate a series of murders in which men are killing the women they love, and discover that these men have all been spending time with strippers. Naturally you can guess Dean’s reaction to this news.

“Strippers, Sammy, Strippers. We are on an actual case involving strippers. Finally.”

You know, if it were anyone else I would write them off as a complete pig and move on. But I can’t help but laugh whenever Dean displays these tendencies. We all know Dean’s not really a pig, there is much more to him than his obsessions with girls. I just can’t help loving Dean even if he does get all excited over a case involving strippers.

These “strippers” are all actually one woman, er, creature, posing as each man’s perfect woman. Bobby gives Sam the theory that they might be Sirens, which Dean then surprises everybody by referencing The Odyssey. “What, I read!”

Yeah, Dean. But I’ve read The Odyssey and I find it really hard to believe you have, no offence. I find it more likely to believe that Dean may have read a prose version intended for young readers, or maybe a portion at some point in high school when he wasn’t making out in the janitor’s closet. Or even more likely, he may have watched the mini-series starring Armand Assante. But Dean, spend time reading the entire epic poem? Not likely.

I must admit, I too thought for sure the siren was the Doc. Especially when she started seducing Sam in her office. It just seemed to come out of nowhere (and her pickup lines were so lame). That and any girl sleeping with Sammy must be evil. Naturally. I mean, look at Madison and Ruby. He doesn’t exactly have a great track record with meeting women on the road.

Side Note: I loved how Dean got shot down when he was trying to flirt with the Doc. It's not often the girl chooses Sammy over Dean, and I thought Dean's reaction was classic.

So, since I was convinced Dr. Cara Roberts was the big bad, I, like Dean, was totally blindsided by the fake Fed, Nick. The boys were too busy worrying about being discovered as fake agents that they didn’t even stop to think that Nick might be fake too.

By the way, I LOVED Bobby’s row of phone lines! I think it’s great that they’ve set up this way of backing up their identities. It also shows how close they’ve gotten to Bobby and how much they work together and rely on him now. Oh, and I loved the Kiss the Cook apron.

Back to Nick, I totally didn’t see that one coming. Although it makes sense that he would show up to Dean as a guy who shares similar interests, trying to be a better brother. The only person the siren could get Dean to kill would be Sam, there are no women in Dean’s life. Well, Ellen and Jo but they don’t really count anymore since they’re not around. Also, since they were both expecting a woman it was easier to get close to Dean by being a guy instead.

I’m assuming the siren knew who Sam and Dean were, which is also what helped in his deception. He must have some sort of ESP or something. He knew just how to cozy up to Dean. Then he tried to turn the brothers on each other. Which is bad. Was anyone else cringing and hiding their eyes as Sam and Dean were fighting? I think that is the only time we’ve seen them fight like that. Sure, Dean has thrown a few punches, there was the wrestling match in “Tall Tales,” and Sam attacked Dean when he thought he wasn’t Dean, but aside from that they’ve never fought this way. It was scary. Even scarier, Dean would have killed Sammy if Bobby hadn’t shown up. Thank God for Bobby.

Using Dean’s infected blood Bobby killed the Siren, but the damage was already done. As I said earlier, the seeds of discord have been sown.

While the siren’s venom may have encouraged the actions of Sam and Dean, and while Sam and Dean later denied that they meant what was said, you know the words were all their own. Dean doesn’t completely trust Sam because he knows Sam is still lying to him and communicating with Ruby behind his back. He knows Sam has changed.

And in Sam’s reaction to the venom I believe we saw a scary foreshadowing of what might happen if Dean doesn’t knock some sense into him and get him to stop whatever he’s doing with Ruby. The venom made him overly confident in his powers and his ability to hunt down and kill Lilith. If continues to grow in this confidence Castiel and Uriel are going to come after him, and that is not good.

While this episode may have seemed harmless on the surface I have a feeling that this episode is the one that truly sets the stage for what is to come. This one has foreshadowed where we’re going and what is going to happen with the brothers I the final episodes. It’s not going to be good. I’m not sure I like where we’re headed. I don’t like the idea of Sam and Dean against each other. But after last night’s episode I have a feeling that is where we’re headed.

And in typical Kripke fashion, this episode ends ominously and we are left without a new episode for another month. He really does take pleasure in torturing us.
