Last week I had auditions for Signature Studio LA and One-on-One Productions. Both of these organizations are networking groups that put on casting director workshops as well as agent and manager showcases. I got into both, and I wasted no time getting involved, attending my first workshop this past Saturday. So I have acted quickly on my New Year's resolution.
As for the class itself, I thought it went well, and moreover I learned what I can expect from this type of "workshop." When you audition for a role, you will usually know how you did by getting a callback, or skipping that and getting the part. Well these workshops sort of combine an acting class and an actual audition. So far, I can assume that the format is going to be as follows: CD introduces themselves, pairs people up, then you have readings. Within the readings, the CD might give you a redirect or not. After that, it's really over. You can probably follow up with a thank you note to the person who came in. Unfortunately, you leave sort of unfulfilled because there is really no next step. But when you're a non-union n00b with no connections, this is the way to get access - you pay for it.
On Thursday my friend Dave and I are going to be performing at a Manger's Showcase at SSLA. We have a funny scene on paper. I hope we can bring it to life Thursday. Comedy is tough, which is why I prefer drama. But this was Dave's idea, so it's his pick.
I've realized though that in the future I want to either do a dramatic scene or a romantic comedy with a girl. I prefer drama because there isn't the expectation of a joke, and you can make the pauses and context work for you. And for some reason, I really work well with romantic comedy scenes. I think that's because I have never had those types of feelings, so when they come out in acting they are fresh and new. Maybe.
Anyway, this is an important week and I've got to make sure I stay healthy (Andy is sick) and do my best. Now I gotta call our apartment manager to get the smell out of my shower. YES!
