While plenty of sources indicate that the old cartoon humor magazine LIFE was based on the American version of Puck, they're wrong. Puck started out as a German language publication in (Pardon as I not looking this up) I believe, St. Louis. An English language edition started a few years later. Puck was eventual purchased by Hearst and became the name of the Hearst - King Feature Syndicate comics section. "What Fools These Mortals Be!" As far as I know, the English PUNCH did not feature that many illustrations in those days. The old Life had both John Held Jr as (i recall) art director, and I have some great "Will Rogers for President" issues.
