Vanity of Vanities, All is Vanity--Press

Yesterday I received an e-mail from Mr. Howard Ely reminding me that my “The Oak in Autumn” had been selected for publication in an upcoming volume tentatively titled IMMORTAL VERSES. He also reminded me to return the writer’s proof, which had been mailed to me a few days earlier with any corrections. Oh, and by the way, although I am under ( Read more... )

I also have had the same problem with the rather glowing reply to my rather off the cuff poem sent to the "immortal" files, and found the pitch wanting.
Hard earned $ to have a table wedge handy is not in my budget, nor in my ego strokage list of to do things, so no $ changed hands in this very obvious cash grabbing situation.
Having been told I am a very promising artist, and a very good singer, and a promising poet, in the past; by those who should know better, and some who have yet to learn; I find the email from Mr.Ely rather funny, and a bit bitter-sweet.
So a fair warning to any and all who fall victim to the charms of a fast reward for a few minutes of type, beware; your cash flow is about to be reduced by more than the amount of your passion to speak.

I recently recieved the same email from poetry.com saying my poem was chosen for publication. Silly....How foolish would i be to give them the right to publish a poem of mine, when they are going to charge me for the book my poem is in, so they can turn around and sell it and make money off of it. Thats all they do. Hey your poem is great, we will publish it and charge you for the book. They could at least give the people a free book since they are using their poems to make the book. They are making money off of us...This is so crazy.. and to think some people buy the book. I would never give the satisfaction. They want my poem, they pay me, or give me a book.

How Silly anonymous May 14 2006, 01:38:24 UTC
I also received the same e-mail and the same letter in the mail saying that my poem would be published in "Immortal Verses". I am very surprised at how much some of us think alike because I was thinking of how messed up it was that they were making money off my poem and still wanting me to buy the book. I'm not very happy. That is so silly!!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with the title "Immortal Verses" it's just a title after all. Congrat's to publication though, I'm getting mine published as well. It means quite alot to me, since I want to be a novelist one day. First step, I guess. =)

i was really happy when i got this mail..now reading all these comments from you guys and everyhitng...made me realize this is a some short of a scam for us to buy their book..which is (our) poem in it... this kinda made me upset... so do they actually send everyone the same mail telling each and single one that they made it to the semi finalist and gonna be published and everything?

Haha...so I see we're all contributors to this IMMORTAL VERSES book coming out. I felt the same way as all of you. I'm also in the entertainment business and the thought of creating a work of any kind, and then having to buy the book/film/album/etc that you helped create is pretty ridiculous. If they were selling you the books at a wholesale price, so you could turn around and sell them for a marked-up price, that is one thing. However, doing what they do is a joke. They sent me a letter telling me I could read my poem to the audience at their latest convention in Las Vegas (of which I was in Vegas from July 16-19, 2006..and the convention started the 20th, haha.) I missed that, but still wasn't going to do it, because they would charge me an admission fee ( ... )

Immortal Verses anonymous August 7 2006, 10:22:28 UTC
I had no idea going in what I was getting myself into. I simply wanted to reveal my inner thoughts to the world and poetry.com seemed to be my portal. I guess I was wrong. I was so excited about it I was willing to spend the money to get my name out there. Its a shame we all had to go through this nonsense. If anyone can offer me an easy and low-cost method to publishing my writings im all ears. Thank you all for opening my eyes.

o well... anonymous August 8 2006, 00:15:56 UTC
i entered my poem too, but i thought it was complete crap how they wanted me to buy my own poem, especially since i had a 'copyright' according to them.

then a few weeks ago they send me an email saying ill get a glass hand carved trophy mailed to me because of my work... if i send them $70.

i feel bad now that i know its a total scam, i would feel depressed if i actually spent more than 2 mins writing my poem(i was bored and couldn't sleep after watching Black/White.)

i had been sent a letter saying that my poem is to be published and all i had to do was correct it if needs editing but i never got told i had to pay anything to get it published my letter actually said.... YOUR POEM WAS SELECTED FOR PUBLICATION, AND AS A CONTEST SEMI FINALIST, ON THE BASIS OF YOUR UNIQUE TALENT AND ARTISTIC VISION. IN THIS REGARD YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION WHAT SO EVER TO SUBMIT AN ENTRY FEE, ANY SUBSIDY PAYMENT OR TO MAKE ANY PURCHASE OF ANY KIND....AND then it goes on to say... BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA IF I WANT TO PURCHASE A BOOK THERE WILL BE A SMALL FEE....But i dont have to pay to get it published
