Again, because the ruins defy description I'll try my hand at the city.
Mexicans often enough make the assumption that white skin equals money and here this assumption is the reality. There are three kinds of hotels in the city: those with reliable water than can be turned hot for showering, hotels that don't offer that luxury, and the kind of hotels we have in the States. The first type seemed for the wealthy Mexicans, with buildings noticeably different. Perhaps simply clean. The States-standard of luxury made sure to get your attention- with bright Vegas lights...that might well be on during the day.
Maybe I was just bitter at the double/triple prices for damn near everything tourist related. Yet what caused even more frustration was the situation of the people. I saw a great deal of illiteracy, in spite of the fair amount of money that ripping off generations-worth of tourists should bring, not to mention tourism in general. People of the this state of Chiapas, more even than those of Oaxaca and other areas, often enough feel that frustration along the lines of: “Fucking tourists, wish I didn’t need their money, but sonufa...Special price for you, sir!”
The only bright side to the city is that apparently the weed’s quite powerful and good. Or so a friend experienced.
