Terrorists, period

How many times did you hear the terms "radical Islam" or "extremist Islam" during last week's terror attacks in and around Paris?

Let's consider those phrases for a moment.

More than a billion people around the world are Muslims. It is the world's second-largest religion. Terrorism goes against all of the tenets of Islam. Consider the five pillars of Islam, then ask yourself if those principles are markedly different than your own. Indeed, ask yourself if your life wouldn't be better if you practiced those principles in your own way. Mine would.

Even the meaning of the word "jihad" has become perverted. In Islam, its chief meaning is the struggle to do good. In that sense, all of us are jihadists.

In an insidious way, the repetition of the phrases "radical Islam" or "extremist Islam" libel an entire religion and dangerously contribute to the forming or strengthening of stereotypes. The people who commit acts of terror are not Islamists. Through their hatred, they have forfeited their rights to call themselves Muslims. They simply are terrorists. Period. Let's start recognizing them as such.
