One of the news staff writers recently wrote a fine feature story, so I emailed him to let him know what a good story it was. Part of his reply: "Feels good to hear positive feedback (because I know I've told you we don't get too much of it around here, good or bad)."

People don't work at newspapers for the money. I once knew a reporter who had a second job, stocking canned goods on supermarket shelves-and he wasn't doing it because he had a passion for garbanzo beans. This means an editor should at least frequently give reporters an "attagirl" or "attaboy" so they feel their work counts for something.
