Spending the day building a post
Writer's block has really been holding me down lately. Not only have I not really felt like writing anything in this journal, but I've been struggling with writing emails, fiction, music, anything. Instead, I just want to suck in the media around me. I've got nothing better to do at work today, so in between phone calls, I'll work on this a bit.
One of my favorite novelists currently is John Irving. This is entirely mobley's fault when he suggested I read the novel 'A Prayer for Owen Meany'. After talking to other people who love John Irving's stories, I was told to read 'The World According to Garp". I loved that novel even more than 'Owen Meany'. Then, not too long ago, I got to watch the film version of 'Cider House Rules' which was amazing and made me want to start reading the book. It also made me want to go back and watch some of the movies based on John Irving's books. The first movie I got was the 1982 film version of 'Garp' starring Robin Williams, Glenn Close and John Lithgow. The movie was pretty good, but the most interesting part of watching that film was seeing how the film makers pulled some different themes out of the story than I did when I read the novel. Lust is important to the story and it's a major driver of the plot, but I always looked at Irving's story as more about death (or birth) in general. I felt that the movie 'Garp' skimmed over the death which made it feel a little bit more weak than 'Cider House Rules' which maintains that theme very strongly with the orphans and abortion topic. I'm about to get the film 'Simon Birth', the movie based loosely on 'Owen Meany', but John Irving hated that movie and asked for the characters to be renamed as to further his story from the movie. So I'm not expecting much.
I watched the movie 'The Girl Next Door' last night, which I enjoyed, but it went a little over the top with the love conquers all theme. It was cute, though, and I have a special place in my heart for movies about porn and the porn industry. That movie is a total wet dream fantasy.
