KEXP dj shakedown

What's going on at KEXP?

Amanda Wilde has been fired? Stevie Zoom no longer has the afternoon shift? I noticed that these two were not on the air recently, but I didn't know there was such a big shake down. Curious...

kexp ... so sad anonymous January 22 2005, 00:15:57 UTC
it's sad when a great station like KCMU gets "bought" and bloats it's own version of Carson Daly as John Richards and claims they are commercial free when they are always promoting Starbucks or Rhino releases ... losers. they are The End.

a little bitter? patrick January 22 2005, 03:47:29 UTC
now, i never listened to the station when it was KCMU because I grew up in Issaquah which is the one place in the eastside that doesn't get 90.3 clearly, but I'm not sure how you can be so bitter about it. KEXP is one of the best things about seattle.

Is the underwriting on KEXP that bad? No, I don't think so. I've listened to nonprofit radio stations that are much worse. Surf the internet and listen to some radio stations there.

yeah - i guess i was bitter. i was bummed that stevie and mamanda are no longer on the staion but here i am at home listening to KEXP right now. it is one of the best stations going. but ... they are getting somewhat commercial even if it his hidden in their play lists and it's still a little sad that they are no longer the local/seattlestaion they once were - but now a world wide alterna-force. oh well - times are changing and i guess i should get used to it. thanks.

2004 was a strange year in music for people who like indie music. With the explosion of bands like Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, etc, it seems like the whole world has started listening to that indie sound. There is definitely money in what KEXP plays, but I think this is more a comes and goes thing. If the station goes too far with what it's doing and starts to really sound like it's selling out, it's will lose it's audience. They will know they are doing something wrong when they don't make goal on the pledge drive.

why did it take so long for Amanda Wilde to go? Here's the story ( ... )

I couldn't of said it better myself. She seemed so fake and so out of place. Every time I heard her, I would say to myself "why is she on this station?" Her playlists seemed to be created by The Man.

her playlists didn't look like they were made by The Man. i and everyone that i know agrees that amanda wilde sucked as a dj, but the one thing that i can say about her is that she tried to reach all genres of music during her shift.

i hated her playlists. she'd be lucky if she strung two good songs in a row. but, the very least that i can say about her is that her playlists were somewhat varied - even iif uninspired.

Amanda was the best DJ. You all are wrong and you should appologize! :^P

Amanda was really great at interviewing bands/musicians. She was wonderfully calm and congenial with alcoholic/meth-using/chaotic (but nonetheless talented) rockers. I miss the heck out of her.

i agree with Amanda being a great DJ. I have been listening to Amanda over the internet for the last 5 years and really enjoyed her variety of music, her calm demeanor and her insightful interviews. As for playing popular music, yeah some of it was mainstream, but that does mean a DJ is lame. It means those of you with the indie attitude need to loosen up; b/c "your" band may become popluar one day does not mean they now suck.

Amanda was one of the better DJ's at KEXP, and people who diss her neither have taste, nor seemed to have been able to remove their heads from their anal cavity long enough to listen to good music. I was never a fan of Stevie Zoom's, but how KEXP handled the situation was completely disgraceful. I think the other DJ's should have all threatened to resign in protest. She was/is AMAZINGLY funny and delightful. It's KEXP and the listener's loss. Shame on the corporate dicks at KEXP.

Her knowledge was quite extensive and she would ALWAYS play my requests but sometimes I found her on-air personality a little dry. I'm finding myself not really excited about Kevin Cole, either.

Well, anyways, it's time to donate!

I will NEVER EVER EVER again donate to KEXP. I just fired off a letter to the KEXP staff that was pretty long and angry, where I essentially said it was the biggest jackass way to hire a termination, and that KEXP has done little more than short the listener.

I ended it with "Please tell the KEXP management and board of directors that Julie B__________________ said they can go fuck themselves...repeatedly." I signed it with my full name.

I personally hope this is their worst fundraising campaign ever for this bullshit, chickenshit transition. My guess is it's much like that guy at NPR. It's that she's older than most of the staff and they think no one over the age of 35 has taste or talent.

I haven't warmed up to Kevin, but so far I'm not that impressed.

Cheryl is a good choice though. I wasn't a fan of Stevie Zooms, but I can't believe the petty, ridiculously stupid comment people have made in your journal about AW. Obviously they have little knowledge of music, and not much eclectic taste.

Those are pretty harsh words right there. I think there is a greater good than Amanda Wilde's dj job at KEXP. She was on the air for a long time, but sometimes things need to change. I definitely am not wishing for the death of the station or anything like that. Seems a bit extreme to me.

Is Amanda Wilde still on NPR?

Dude, I used to listen to KCMU at home in Issaquah and I live inbetween the mountains. I don't know what you're talking about as far as reception. You're just not as cool as I am. ; a
