Kitten Update: Setback

Nov 19, 2009 18:47

We noticed Punkin's leg was starting to look a bit ugly around the stitches. The fur started peeling back a bit and the skin around the stitches were looking a bit raw. We decided to call the vet and bring her by.

He examined her leg and says it's a pretty nasty infection. It's hard to say where it's from. Dragging her leg when she uses the kitty didn't help matters much, even though we washed her leg before using the cream we were given.

We had to leave her with the vet. he says she will be at a veterinary hospital for about 10 days while they try to treat the infection. She might lose that leg after all, but as I pointed out to Brenda (who wasn't taking this well), she is very healthy otherwise, and didn't appear to be sickly or in pain. The doctor said there were 3 options/phases: Treating the leg, removing the leg, euthanizing Punkin.

I thoroughly reject the last option. She has developed into a very caring and loving kitten. I really doubt this infection will spread as we caught it pretty early, and the thigh is healthy. I had to talk Brenda down from the panic and fear she was headed down. Now is not the time for recriminations and fearing the worst.

So, she'll be out for 10 days and under the care of a doctor that was able to take such a small thing and put a pin in a broken leg. I'll let you know what happens.
