The Duckie ponders a scene from 4.12 Criss Angel is a Douchebag.
Apparently Show and I have been in the same headspace recently, because not long before 4.12 aired, I got distracted during a bio class and jotted down the following:
Sam: [chuckles] You think either of us is going to live through this?
Dean: [big brother is kind of pissed at that sentiment] Yeah. Yeah, I do. And you'll go back to school and marry some snobby Ph.D who can't stand me. And by the time you're thirty, you'll be drinking light beer and wearing cardigans.
Sam: And you'll get around to the half-dozen skanks in the mainland U.S. that you haven't slept with.
Dean: Plus your wife.
Sam: The wife who can't stand you?
Dean: Even the ones who can't stand me don't turn down the chance to see me naked.
So, post-4.12, it's fairly obvious that I had this one bass-ackwards. Not in terms of what either Winchester actually expects of his future - I believed Dean in "Jus in Bello" when he said he thought things would end bloody.
I just didn't think he'd tell Sam as much.
In "Wishful Thinking," Dean prodded Sam about his goals or dreams outside of hunting - wouldn't he want his education and his life with Jessica? He seemed to hold out some tenuous hope that Sam could survive the freakin' Apocalypse and be happy. At the very least, Dean wanted to see Sam carrying that tenuous hope for himself.
Four episodes later, he's saying nope, Sammy, we're screwed. It's like Rufus Turner told him: If this fight doesn't kill you, there's always another one that will. "People like us, there ain't no happy endings."
Dean has been a long-time champion of telling Sammy comforting lies. "Dad was here for Christmas." "Your psychic thing doesn't freak me out." "It's not even that bad, it's not even that bad..."
Why not anymore? After three years on the road, working as equal partners, does big brother Dean no longer feel the need to pretend for Sam's sake? Have his roadside confessions in 4.10 and 11 made some of the smaller "secrets" seem trivial and pointless?
Or has he just embraced the suck?
