Title: Dogfight.
Prompt: Violence.
Rating/Word count: R / 442.
A/N: This is supposed to be my strongest story for my Creative Writing class, so I thought I should share. It's not that long, but it gets a little bit gruesome since it is a violent scene, so beware.
Bijan stands in the crowd with his father, he clutches onto his father's robes and looks wide eyed at the dogs in the middle of the ring. There are two of them -one bigger than the other, both mutts, both with their tails chopped off - being held apart by their owners and separated by a red piece of cloth. The crowd roars its excitement and the dogs flatten their ears against their skulls.
An old man comes forward, stands between the dogs and raises one hand into the air. “Who wants to fight?” He yells and the crowd's roar becomes deafening. The old man rips the cloth apart, the dogs pull against their harnesses, snarling faces dripping saliva and their owners let go of the restraints keeping them apart.
Both dogs lunge at each other, jaws snapping. Bijan hides his face in his father's robes, but his father sees the movement and forces his head back to its original position so he watches the fight. The bigger dog has its paws locked on its opponent's neck in a mocking embrace while the smaller dog's teeth tears into its left ear. The bigger dog shakes its head trying to pull free from its opponent's sharp teeth, but the smaller dog won't budge.
A yelp escapes Bijan's mouth when the bigger dog's attempts to disentangle its enemy shreds its own ear from its head. The smaller dog falls to the ground with a thud and the bigger dog turns to it growling, blood dripping onto the ground. The bigger dog leaps onto the smaller dog and they struggle with each other. After some moments, the smaller dog finds an opening and latches onto the bigger dog's cheek. The crowd goes wild. Bijan watches appalled as the people in the crowd holler at the smaller dog to kill the other mutt. The bigger dog whines in pain and claws desperately at his attacker but the smaller dog refuses to let go.
The owners rush back into the ring, intent on separating the mutts. One grabs onto the bigger dog's harness and the other pulls at the smaller dog's legs. They pull and the bigger dog starts whining harder. They cannot dislodge the smaller dog. Both owners tug at their dogs in vain. The smaller dog won't yield. A third man comes out of the crowd holding a stick, he raises it high over his head and hits the smaller dog between its shoulder blades. Bijan watches horrified as the dogs are pulled apart. He turns his head to his father and a squeak escapes his lips. “Dad? I don't think I want a dog anymore.”
