Title: upstairs, closer, commons
Fandom: LOST
Characters: Eloise/Charles, Ana/Jack, Esau & Jacob
Rating: PG, PG-13, PG
Word Count: 324
Summary: Three drabbles written for lostsquee

(upstairs, Eloise/Charles)

It doesn't surprise her when she opens the door to find him standing there. (somehow, she always knows)

"Hello, Ellie," he says. (can I see him? he means)

She mirrors his false smile. "Hello." (no, Charles, you can't)

She hears Daniel shuffle down the stairs, and Chopin drifts through the hallway. "So, he's a musician, then," Charles says. (disappointed and proud)

"Yes." (how could I let him be anything else?)

"He's very talented." (it's not a decision you can make)

Eloise nods. "He is." (I have to pretend I can)

Charles shakes his head. "Will you ever come back?" (I miss you, Ellie)

"Never." (I miss you, too)

(closer, Ana Lucia/Jack)

In the dark, Ana Lucia can just make out the shake of his shoulders. "What, you crying?" She wants to kick him in the teeth for it, for always leaving her to be the strong one.

Jack doesn't bother to deny it. Ana tosses aside the blanket and pulls on her shirt. "Where are you going?" His voice is cracked and worried, and she'd hate him if she didn't know what it was like to be surrounded by people and still be completely alone.

"The little girl's room."

He sits up and pulls her into a kiss, too desperate to be a casual goodbye. "Be careful out there."

(commons, Esau and Jacob)

Jacob always chooses white, snatching up the best pieces before Esau can protest. He carefully arranges them on the board (the miracle-performing doctor on the soft jungle floor, the bright young boy always in the right place at the right time, the friendly fellow protected by a web of mathematics) and smiles up at Esau expectantly.

Esau gets whatever's left, chipped black pieces he tosses clumsily into the game (a broken hunter in a wheelchair, an arrogant businessman banished from anywhere important, a liar whose potential has been stifled by hippies).

Esau has one advantage though, as Jacob studies the board. White will always make the first mistake.
