He finds Cindy in the courtyard, sitting on the stone bench under a tree (their spot, he likes to think of it). The leaves sway gently over their heads as he joins her. "It's a nice night."
"For now," Cindy says, casting a reprimanding frown his way. Everyone else is already inside the temple, preparing for the predicted storm.
"Afraid of a little rain?" he teases, bumping their arms together.
"Of course not. But it makes the children nervous." She sounds annoyed, but Lennon knows better. This is their routine. When they're alone out here they can let go, she can worry and he can smile. Out here, they don't have to be anyone's good example.
He rests an arm on Cindy's shoulder, twirling a finger through her hair. "The kids will be fine," Lennon promises. "We all will."
She sighs. "You're probably right."
"I'm always right."
"Oh? I didn't realize being a translator made you an expert on the weather."
"Well-" he says, and as if to prove his lack of expertise, it begins to rain, a large drop of water splashing into the lens of his glasses.
Cindy laughs. "Actually," she assures him, "I like you better when you don't know everything."
Lennon presses a light kiss on her mouth. "I like you all the time."
Her lips curve into a mock pout, and the quickening rain slips through the leaves to soak her clothes. She moves closer, and the water on her arms feels warm under his fingers. He kisses her properly this time, slow and tender, with his thumb on her cheek and her hand on his neck.
Cindy shivers when they separate. The sky crackles, and he can practically hear Dogen grunting about bad omens. "I may not be an expert," Lennon says, "but I do know the temple will protect us from just about anything."
"I'm not afraid," Cindy says, and he chuckles as she kisses the sensitive skin of his neck.
"Good." Lennon winds his arms around her waist, smiling down at her, her face blurred by his dripping glasses. "Neither am I."
