"In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself." ~ Patrick Bateman(Quote from American Psycho)
If you have seen the film American Psycho or read the novel by Bret Ellis you would know what an important part Huey Lewis and The News plays in the life of the main Character, Patrick Bateman. I myself had never given the band much thought beyond what I had heard in the movie. My generation probably recognizes the band from their contribution to the movie Back to the Future, with thier smash hit " Power of love". While I had always thought the song was catchy, it never prompted me to run out and buy any albums.
I have spent the last week reading the novel American Psycho and I noticed that the author dedicates and entire chapter to the band. The way the band is described simply captivated me. So being the inquisitive person I am I decided to download Lewis's two most popular albums, "Sports" and "Fore". I felt that instead of a greatest hits album I would get individual albums. I did this to see if I could get a feel of the music in the context of the time period the album was written. While I feel that greatest hit compilations are useful if you have been a life long listener, they never give you the full experience quite like the original albums do. I gotta say, I am blown away! I have literally listened to these albums over and over again 5 times! The songs while very very catchy, seem to take me back to a different time period in American history. I love everything about these albums, The lyrical content (simple yet powerful) His voice! and The beats.
My favorite songs for each album so far are
Fore- Hip to be Square, Jacobs ladder, Stuck with you
Sports- I want a new drug, Bad is Bad, If this is it
I cannot urge who ever reads to this to give the band a listen! You might just find that "It really is hip to be square"
