So I decided to watch AFI's current top 100 movies of all time. I have seen a few of them before. I have decided that I will watch all of them again in no particular order. I will highlight as I finish and write a short review underneath.
1. Citizen Kane, 1941.
- I really couldn't see why this was number one. I have heard from numerous people that it's because it was so different for it's time but I really can't see it. Great acting no doubt, but probably not my personal best.
2. The Godfather, 1972.
3. Casablanca, 1942.
- Great movie! #3? I personally don't think so. I mean sure it had a good plot, and great acting but it definately was NOT the 3rd greatest movie of all time.
4. Raging Bull, 1980.
- I was really not impressed with this movie. I mean sure it has some good parts, but overall I think it was predictable and boring. I don't know, Just not a fan. Goodfellas was far better.
5. Singin' in the Rain, 1952.
- I loved this movie! Now I know where so many songs I heard through life come from. I am not a huge fan of musicals but I loved this. They sure don't make movies like this anymore.
6. Gone With the Wind, 1939.
7. Lawrence of Arabia, 1962.
8. Schindler's List, 1993.
- This is one of those movies that you can only watch once every few years. Very disturbing but also thought provoking. Ray Feinnes played in my opinion the role of his career.
9. Vertigo, 1958.
- Another movie that I don't think belongs in the top 10. I mean sure, it was good and but top 10? Nah. James Stewart was awesome in this though!
10. The Wizard of Oz, 1939.
- I guess I can see why this movie is in the top 10. It's world reknown, Ground breaking for it's time. The songs are classics. I just personally don't like this movie.
11. City Lights, 1931.
12. The Searchers, 1956.
13. Star Wars, 1977.
- Wonderful, one of my all time favorites! This movie revolutionized film as we know it today. George Lucas could do no wrong in my mind...Until Phantom Menace of course! haha
14. Psycho, 1960.
15. 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968.
- This movie was awesome! Musically and visually awesome! Very creepy yet very thought provoking. Animatronic monkeys and all.
16. Sunset Blvd., 1950.
17. The Graduate, 1967.
18. The General, 1927.
19. On the Waterfront, 1954.
- Marlon Brando is becoming one of my favorite actors of all time! This movie was great! A great story of morality and doing the right thing even when faced with death. Awesome stuff
20. It's a Wonderful Life, 1946.
21. Chinatown, 1974.
22. Some Like It Hot, 1959.
23. The Grapes of Wrath, 1940.
24. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982.
25. To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962.
- Classic movie and classic story. I was kind of surprised that this wasn't higher. Saw this in highschool and it was kind of slow watching this time. Still a good movie.
26. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, 1939.
27. High Noon, 1952.
28. All About Eve, 1950.
29. Double Indemnity, 1944.
- Really interesting movie. Edward G Robinson was awesome!
30. Apocalypse Now, 1979.
31. The Maltese Falcon, 1941.
- This movie was actually really good. I had no idea how good an actor Bogart was until I saw this. I think I am going to watch more of his movies just so I can see what else he did.
32. The Godfather Part II, 1974.
33. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1975.
- One of the best movies I have ever seen. Amazing in a terrifying type of way. They don't make movies like this anymore.
34. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937.
35. Annie Hall, 1977.
36. The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957.
- This movie was just awesome! Just around 3 hours but so well worth it. I think the underlying message here is that no matter how hard you try during war, you can never find civility.
37. The Best Years of Our Lives, 1946.
38. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, 1948.
39. Dr. Strangelove, 1964.
- One of my favorite movies of all time. Peter Sellers died way to early. This movie was not only funny but it had a very deep point. "There is no fighting in the war room!
40. The Sound of Music, 1965.
41. King Kong, 1933.
42. Bonnie and Clyde, 1967.
- Does this movie deserve to be 42? no. Better than The Deer Hunter? Jaws? hardly. I mean, great acting, but the movie is not historically accurate. Don't think this movie is as good as it's ranked. Still it was a decent watch.
43. Midnight Cowboy, 1969.
44. The Philadelphia Story, 1940.
45. Shane, 1953.
46. It Happened One Night, 1934.
- While I thought this movie was good, I really didn't see how it could be considered great. Maybe since I have seen so many movies with the same set up. Girl falls in love with unlikely but lovable guy it overplayed in our time so maybe it had a different effect back then.
47. A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951.
- I thought the acting in this movie was amazing! This film reminded me of how little humans have changed. I hated the character of Blanche and I really have no sympathy for her. Stanley however was a typical blue collar asshole but I really understood what his character was all about.
48. Rear Window, 1954.
49. Intolerance, 1916.
50. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, 2001.
- Personally think this should be higher. I also think the whole series should be included because they are all amazing movies.
51. West Side Story, 1961.
52. Taxi Driver, 1976.
53. The Deer Hunter, 1978.
- This movie was great!!! I am so used to seeing Christopher Walken do comedy these days it's hard to imagine him in such a serious role. Deniro was amazing too! This movie probably gave me more of an emotional feeling than any other I have seen on this list so far. Just a wonderful film
54. M-A-S-H, 1970.
55. North by Northwest, 1959.
56. Jaws, 1975.
57. Rocky, 1976.
58. The Gold Rush, 1925.
59. Nashville, 1975.
60. Duck Soup, 1933.
61. Sullivan's Travels, 1941.
62. American Graffiti, 1973.
63. Cabaret, 1972.
- Should be much lower! If even on the list at all. Seriously? This movie is so anti climactic it's insane. Whore finds love, Whore loves money, Whore gets pissed that her boyfriend sleeps with her other boyfriend. Whore gets pregnant, whore has abortion. All set to song and dance. Did I mention blatent bisexuality and nazi's?? This movie blows
64. Network, 1976.
- "I'm mad as hell and I am not gonna take it anymore" I always wondered where that quote came from, now I know. This movie was far ahead of it's time.
65. The African Queen, 1951.
66. Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1981.
67. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, 1966.
- This movie is DISTURBING! It reminds me of how some people can make life so uncomfortable for others. It shows the dark side of marriage and how sometimes it comes through. Elizabeth Taylor was amazing!
68. Unforgiven, 1992.
- This movie was awesome!! I don't know why I had never seen it before but I just loved it. Clint Eastwood should have been given the Oscar for this.
69. Tootsie, 1982.
- This movie had it's funny moments no doubt, but I couldn't really get into it. I feel like it probably inspired the movie "Mrs.Doubtfire". For the most part funny, but one of the greatest of all time? No I don't think so.
70. A Clockwork Orange, 1971.
- One of Kubricks best!! Should be MUCH higher than this. Twisted,Deranged and funny. Probably because of the hard to follow dialouge this movie is lower on the list but still one of my favorites.
71. Saving Private Ryan, 1998.
- Classic!! Epitome of what a war movie should be. Vin Diesel can actually say he was in a classic film! hahaha
72. The Shawshank Redemption, 1994.
- I swear everytime I watch this movie I think of Family guy when they parody this with the monopoly guy. Great movie but it always kind of pissed me off. I can't imagine how many situations like this happened during this time period.
73. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969.
74. The Silence of the Lambs, 1991.
- I can't watch this movie without falling in love with Hannibal Lecter. I don't know why but he is so likable on a psychotic level. Classic stuff! Too bad the other movies in the series sucked so bad.
75. In the Heat of the Night, 1967.
76. Forrest Gump, 1994.
- The more I watch this movie the more I am not sure if this is a classic. Sure it's quoted and it's pretty well known, but I can't help but think it's kind of a stupid movie. Then again, Stupid is as stupid does.
77. All the President's Men, 1976.
78. Modern Times, 1936.
79. The Wild Bunch, 1969.
80. The Apartment, 1960.
81. Spartacus, 1960.
82. Sunrise, 1927.
83. Titanic, 1997.
- Visually amazing!! But perhaps one of the worst story lines ever. Old lady and the diamond?? Kate naked is the highlight of the movie. I clapped when Leo died.
84. Easy Rider, 1969.
85. A Night at the Opera, 1935.
86. Platoon, 1986.
87. 12 Angry Men, 1957.
88. Bringing Up Baby, 1938.
89. The Sixth Sense, 1999.
- Definately should NOT be in the top 100. I don't know if it's because M. Night's films are so awful now or what but I simply cannot watch this movie more than once.....a few years or so. I just hate this film.
90. Swing Time, 1936.
91. Sophie's Choice, 1982.
92. Goodfellas, 1990.
- "As far back as I could remember I always thought this was an awesome movie" Classic! Should be higher
93. The French Connection, 1971.
94. Pulp Fiction, 1994.
- Should be much higher!!!! Seriously!! This film is 100 times better than the sixth sense.
95. The Last Picture Show, 1971.
-Personally, I feel that this movie should be a lot higher. Maybe at least 10 spots. Cloris Leachman was just awesome! I couldn't believe how many stars we recognize today were in this film. I don't have any intentions of watching the sequel but this movie in my opinion was awesome!
96. Do the Right Thing, 1989.
- It's weird watching a movie that has so many racial topics after this years election. Things have really progressed in the last 20 years. Good movie.
97. Blade Runner, 1982.
- "More human than human...that's our motto" Personally feel that this is one of Harrison Fords best.
98. Yankee Doodle Dandy, 1942.
99. Toy Story, 1995.
- I know why this movie is on this list. I think 99 is a good spot. Visually revolutionary as far as cartoons go. Storyline...ehh
100. Ben-Hur, 1959.
- Hopefully this movie will be off the list next time voting. This movie was just awful. 3 hours of utter shit. I seriously can't believe this is on the list.
