IRINA
Like I said to Chash, I need a job so that I will not get stuck being Grandma's chauffer. So far I have only driven her to the "spa" (gym) once, but I only got out of driving her other places by accident, or because I suck. Allow me to demonstrate.
Yesterday morning, Grandma called and we had the following phone conversation:
Grandma: Did your Dad tell you that we're going at 11:30?
Me: What? Where? How?
Grandma: My hair appointment is for today at 11:30.
Me: Um...
Grandma: Can you pick me up at 11?
Me: I'm sorry, I thought you wanted to get your hair done tomorrow. I don't so much have a car today.
Grandma: You can't drive me to get my hair done?
Me: I can't think of any way that I could. I didn't realize that I needed a car today. I'm sorry.
Grandma: Let me call and check. I'm pretty sure it's today.
She was right about the day, and she drove herself. When she got back, she called to say that she thought the miscommunication had been her fault, and also that she (and everyone else on the roads) was still alive. How nice.
Then again today. Last night she said to pick her up at 2:30 for a 3:00 dentist appointment. She wanted to be there early because she has a new dentist.
At 2:00 today I was still at Emma's house with Sarah. We were watching a movie, and I was going to leave at 2:15. The timing was perfect--the movie ended just at 2:15 and I left. I have never driven directly from Emma's to Grandma's, so I was making it up as I went along. I was almost there when my plan was ruined by a one-way street. So I was wandering around Grandma's neighborhood, not exactly lost but also not sure how to get to where I was going. I made my way out to the closest major road, where I was forced to turn right when I wanted to go left. I was just waiting to turn and thinking about a way to get back to where I wanted to be, when there, speeding along in her little green car, was Grandma. I looked down at the clock: 2:33. So I was three minutes late. But for her to have been where she was at 2:33, she would have had to have left at 2:30, if not sooner. I resolved to follow her, but that plan was soon cut short when I was caught at a red light. I called Dad at school, and he figured I could probably just go home. On my way home, I was having doubts about my vision, thinking that maybe I'd seen another tiny old lady in a green car with what I thought was her license plate. I turned around and went back to her house: no car. So I went home, where I found a message on the answering machine, left at 1:50: "Becca, it's your Grandma. I guess you've already left. I can't remember what time I told you to come." Great. Then, minutes later (it was by now about 3:10), I received a phone call from the dentist's office: "Your Grandma is here and she wants you to know that she drove herself and that she's here okay." I considered telling the secretary that I already knew, as I'd seen her on the way there, but I just said, "Yeah, I figured. Thanks."
So now all I need is a call from Grandma saying that she got home okay and that she thinks she had another communication issue. Perhaps if I fail enough at being a chauffer, I won't even have to do that as a summer job. But the thought of her driving herself is terrifying. As much as she goes to the "spa", I still don't think she's strong enough to turn the wheel or push the pedals. I guess we'll find out. HGD.
So my summer's shaping up to be awesome, how about everyone else's?
