Tonight, the conclusion to Torchwood - Miracle Day aired, and...
...well, it could have been better. The last nine weeks have been working up to this, and you can't help but think that six weeks would probably have been enough to tell the whole story in a tighter package. Tonight, the whole mystery unfolds - or does it? True, the "Miracle" is undone, costing some characters their lives as death returns to the Earth, and the stage is set for future adventures...
...but surely something of this magnitude should have more... well, magnitude to it. The finale seems small, like the money ran out, and the dark forces behind it all are never truly brought to account, apart from a certain mole who so very nearly gets away with almost bringing the whole mission down in flames - literally.
This final episode doesn't do a "Return Of The King", and spend a third of its running time covering the "what happened next", but it does leave you wondering how the world gets out of the mess it finds itself in. The global economy is still screwed, and a reference to "ten funerals an hour" isn't really enough.
Sorry, Russell - maybe it was too much of a stretch to take the series out of its "comfort zone" (Wales), but it was worth a shot. If you're going to expect your audience to devote ten hours of their lives to a show, however, you really have to be at the top of your game - and this wasn't quite it...
The Final Word... A brave attempt to explore new territory, and give Jack more to do than die and be moody, but the world-changing threat seems short-changed by what actually ends up on screen. 7/10
