Promo + Spoilers = Drabble
Also this gem. Based on the promo for 2x20 next week plus SPOILERS so seriously, don't click if you don't want Glee spoilers.
So, watched the promo, and combined that with the spoilers about Prom King & Queen, and this was the result. I watched the promo about ten times before I started writing it and then again afterwards. I'm content.
pg, has mention of the canonical Klaine (sigh), untitled and all that jazz.
"Dude, that rocks. It's like Braveheart."
Kurt smiles, pleased, but he still notices the strange look on Blaine's face. He tries his best not to think about it, and when he comes back downstairs after changing, he can't find a trace of it in Blaine's face. He puts it out of his mind, instead choosing to focus on how far Finn's come.
Less than two years ago, Finn was assisting in throwing Kurt in a dumpster most mornings. Now he's genuinely supportive of his stepbrother's sartorial and relationship choices. Kurt lets himself consider the rest of the glee club, too. Puck was the instigator of the dumpster tossing, and two weeks ago, he goes and mentions that Kurt has a boyfriend with complete casualness. It was the lack of remark that made it remarkable in Kurt's mind.
Blaine's expression is clear and untroubled the night of prom, but Kurt can't help but notice that there's a certain distance between them once they arrive at the actual dance. Sure, they're both out, but sometimes Kurt wonders about Blaine being proud. Blaine seems more pleased and proud about fitting in and being given solos even though he's gay. Kurt's just proud.
Kurt remembers what Blaine told him about not trying so hard to stand out.
So Kurt tries not to let the distance bother him, and he manages to have a good time at first. Then, suddenly Blaine's up front singing, with Brittany and Tina singing back-up. Kurt knows Blaine's a performer, but this is ridiculous. He doesn't even attend McKinley. Kurt's wearing a kilt, and Kurt's going to be who he is, but he's not stupid. He knows that there are people whispering about "the fag in the skirt."
He doesn't appreciate being abandoned so Blaine can feed his ego with girls screaming his name.
The problem is that Blaine's finished singing, but still not back near Kurt when they announce Prom King & Queen. And of all the hurtful things he's ever imagined happening to him in high school, being elected Prom Queen? Wasn't one of them. The entire population of the room turns to stare at him-some pitying, some mocking, a few angry on his behalf-but his boyfriend is no where to be seen.
Kurt holds his head high and walks up to the front. If they want to mock him, he's not going to them the pleasure. He's got on his best perfectly blank mask. And as he walks up the stairs, he sees a door in the back of the room start to close, and he recognizes the person leaving.
Kurt will stand there and take whatever they dish out, but Blaine can't even stay in the same room.
