weekend update

I was on call this weekend and feel like I accomplished more than on any typical weekend.  I was busy enough on-call, which I like, and I've been taking a lot of satisfaction from my job lately.  I like the action.  I like intervening in things.

My big accomplishment was building this desk (inspired by roommate
imspanish):

and getting a bunch of stuff that hadn't been given a home yet a place to stay other than the floor and thrown onto a bookshelf.  Now it looks better than this, since I put more stuff away and straightened things up after the photo:

The desk was super easy (the difficulty to level of satisfaction ratio is ridiculously tilted toward stoke)... used a piece of good smelling cedar plywood left over from the desk
imspanish built, with $5 Ikea legs and using the angled piece cut off to make it fit my corner as the shelf above, so the lines of the shelf and desk front are parallel.  I wasn't even considering having a desk in my room, since I didn't have a computer, but once he built his and I decided it was time to plug in again - I got excited about the idea.  Now I have my favorite speakers hooked up, have the music that was hostage to my external hard drive for the last 2 years playing, and am typing under my little light, feeling quite pleased with myself.

I'm going to store my drums since I'm too paranoid to really play them properly for fear of the neighbor's wrath, plus they make the room feel cluttered.  I want to get one of these chairs.  I am not into the wicker, so maybe I'll shell out the $$ for this one, which looks way better.  Not much money really (see last post).  I know it'd kind of a random desire, but I sat in one of those during the superbowl and couldn't believe how comfortable it was for a 4 hr game.

I promised myself I'd write every day once I got my new computer, then promptly missed the 3rd and 4th days.  I forgave myself and decided to forge on rather than throw in the towel.

The biggest surprise of the weekend was the surprisingly good latte acquired from... Ikea.  I had two, one on the way in and one on the way out.  They use the same beans as Bigfoot Espresso, which I went to w/ Jamie 4 times in two days of snowboarding - in Bellingham and Tacoma/Bonney Lake.

The nicest surprise of the weekend was getting my plywood cut.  I thought I could go to Lowes or a lumber yard to have it cut.  Tried both but they only cut perpendiculars - as mentioned, I needed an angle.  So I rolled the dice and pulled into a hardwood floor store down near Southcenter on my way back from Ikea figuring they had to have some sort of table saw or something in back.  I told the young guy working there my predicament and he was like 'yea - I'll help you out.  My boss is about to come though, so when he does, just tell him you're a friend of mine' and proceeded to finish unloading the truck he was working on when I got there.  He boss arrived, I told him I was a friend of Travis', and we proceeded to have a brief talk about sustainable flooring (bamboo and cork of course) and the surprising durability of cork.  Travis got done and we went to the back and cut my boards in about 4 minutes and I was out the door.  He yelled 'give me a call' as he walked back into the showroom.  Ok.  I will.

Played football today too.  I don't need to mention again how much I love it.

I want to continue what I'm doing, but I promised myself I'd go to bed by 10pm.  It's 11:30 now.  I'm tired in a very mentally, physically and emotionally satisfying way.

coffee, home, ikea, desk, nice people
