Here is a question for all the other old folks out there: does it ever strike you as strange when you see These Kids Today drinking coffee?

My sister and I were talking the other week about how we always do a double-take when Kirsten pours Ryan and Seth a cup of coffee in the mornings on the O.C. because our mom (who has a multiple cup-a-day habit) would have said, "Don't drink coffee! It will stunt your growth! Here, have some fresh-squeezed orange juice instead." And just now, there was a ten-year-old at Starbucks getting a mocha Frappucino.

I don't know; Starbucks hadn't really hit it big by the time I was out of high school. There were a few around, but they weren't ubiquitous like they are today and the really frou-frou intro-to-coffee drinks like the Frappucino weren't available. I think Borders sold a Mocha Freeze, but who was going to go to Borders at 7:15 a.m.?

Looking back, I can't say as really anyone I knew in high school drank coffee on a regular basis. Like, maybe one person brought it to school in a thermos, and that was her thing, she was the coffee girl. Sometimes people would have a cup of crappy joe when they were, like, at Denny's at midnight or something. I can't say as I really started drinking the stuff until I got to college. (And even then my drug of choice was Dr Pepper -- two of my college friends are coming to visit me this weekend, and they both emailed to ask if I could stock up on the Peps for old time's sake.)

But when I stop at the one in my little corner of suburbia, there are just as many high school kids in line as there are adults going to work. I don't know why it strikes me as odd; our school started at 7:45 a.m., and sometimes I'd have to be at school at 7:00. Since I was often up until the wee hours of the morning doing homework, I certainly could have used the jolt. But it's just one of those pieces of culture that has totally changed in the past ten years that reminds me I Am Getting Old, like my niece's "retro" "Varsity Cheerleading '92" t-shirt.

I still think that the dad who was buying the Frappucino for his ten-year-old was crazy, though. What kid needs that much caffeine and sugar first thing in the morning? And besides, it will stunt her growth!
