A year ago, I went shopping at the local mall. On my way to my favorite bookstore, I was caught in a crush of teenagers anxious to meet some teen stars touring the mall. I tried to escape, but was pushed to the center of the crowd. Five hours later, the teen sensations appeared and I was freed from my strange prison. The hours of pressure and heat permanently altered my body turning it into living diamond. The rage and frustration of not only that period of time, but also a lifetime of struggling unnoticed in a crowd pushed me down the dark path toward super villainy.
I am the Terror that Sparkles in the Night.
I am the loophole in the strictest of rules.
I am FAITH DIAMOND!
After loosing my friends in an alternate dimension, I decided to take a few days off my quest to destroy the Hero's Guild. I checked my DVR and found several episodes of AI-Idol that I hadn't watched yet. I was ten minutes into the episode when a special news broadcast pause my viewing. I though maybe there was a new danger to the city, but it was only a special newscast about The Indestructibles. Pained Face and Voodoo Dancer stood in the background while Captain Restraining Order revealed their newest member.
“So...I'm here to...clean up...Hero's City because...there are just...too many...super villains. They've...been allowed to...cause problems...for the Hero's Guild...and I...don't agree with that,” she said.
I was overwhelmed with fear. Yeah, sure, in her wildest dreams. Captain Restraining Order was staring at her as if he was in love or he had a medical condition that left him unable to blink.
“Who's the new recruit to the Sparkle Squad and why does she sound like a female version of Shatner?” Asher asked.
I turned to answer him and saw that he had dyed his hair prison jumpsuit orange. “She calls herself Conflict Diamond and she's going to try to clean up Hero's City.”
Asher snorted. “Wanna cause trouble?” he asked smiling wickedly.
“What kind of trouble do you have in mind?” I asked.
Asher's smile widened. “We could introduce Conflict Diamond to the most awesome super villain in Hero's City.”
“I don't think Dr. Abomination is available. I heard on the news that he's running another global domination scheme this week,” I said.
“I meant you,” Asher said.
I blushed. “I'm not even in the top ten. I don't even have my own trading card.”
Asher held up his hand for a fist bump. “You're number one in my book.”
I bumped his fist. “As my loyal minion, you're biased.”
Asher smiled. “You with me on the causing trouble?”
I chewed my lip. “Asher, I'm not sure it's a good idea to make an enemy of another hero group when we haven't taken care of the Hero's Guild yet.” I looked back at the TV and glared at Conflict Diamond.
Asher leaned over the couch and whispered in my ear. “You know you want to.”
I shook my head. “We better not. Let's go for coffee instead.”
Asher pouted. “Can I drive?”
“As long as you remember it's not a drag race.”
I shouted at Asher the whole way. He whipped in an out of traffic barely missing the other drivers. He shot through yellow lights at breakneck speed. I screamed at him to slow down as I bounced around the inside of the Diamond Mobile. He whipped into the parking lot of the Kawphy Shopped and reversed into a space with out slowing down. We slammed to a stop in a space.
“Like a glove,” he said.
“Why do you always have to drive like a maniac?” I asked.
“Because it's fun and because I can,” he said. “Besides, you've been spending way too much time around Dodd; you're starting to get as uptight as he is.'
“How's Dodd been doing?” I asked.
“Mr. Uptight is on his was to a full recover back to his stick in the mud, no fun self,” Asher said getting out of the car.
I got out of the car too. “Asher, Dodd isn't that bad.”
“He's like the parent I was created a robot so I'd never have,” Asher said rolling his eyes. He hurried up and opened the door for me.
The Kawphy Shoppe was a frequent place for supers in Hero's City. I was an official neutral spot agreed upon by heroes and villains alike. If anyone wanted to cause trouble, he or she was bound by the laws set down by the 5 Founders to take it outside and pay for any damages. There was a large sign over the front counter “We serve Conflict Diamond”.
“Great,” I muttered.
Asher smiled. “Find a table while I get our coffee.”
I nodded and found a table in the back corner. The moment I sat down a barista delivered a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a cup of hot tea. “You're early this morning, Conflict Diamond,” she said.
“I'm not Conflict Diamond,” I said.
“Sure,” the barista said winking. “You want privacy today.”
“No,” I began but the barista scurried away before I could try to explain myself. I don't drink regular tea and I prefer blueberry bagels to onion bagels. I pushed both of them away.
A few minutes later, Asher appeared with my coffee and blueberry bagel.
He frowned at the table. “What's this?” he asked.
“They mistook me for Conflict Diamond,” I said sipping my coffee.
He shrugged and started eating the onion bagel. He grimaced and pushed it away. “That's a reason to cause trouble all by itself.”
“You shouldn't talk with your mouth full,” I said. I took a bite of my bagel and looked around. Other customers were staring at me and pointing. I started feeling self-conscious. “You mind if we go to High Tech Comics? Fewer people would be staring at us.”
Asher rolled his eyes. He snagged the uneaten part of my bagel and went up to the counter for to go cups.
The moment he got up two young women walked up to my table.
“Can we have your autograph?” they gushed.
“I'm not Conflict Diamond,” I said.
Their faces fell. “Are you trying to hide the face you’re seeing someone behind Angel Face's back?”
“What? No. I'm not Conflict Diamond and we aren't seeing each other. We're just friends,” I said indicating Asher who just returned to the table.
“We are so much more than friends,” he said.
Then, I still can't believe this happened, Asher kissed me...on the mouth, I think he used tongue. I can't be sure. I was so shocked.
