Name: Ushiromiya Kinzo
Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Timeline: EP7 Flashback; After returning to Odawara
Canon Resource Links: Ushiromiya Kinzo @UminekoWiki

Personality:
Before meeting Beatrice on Rokkenjima, Kinzo was merely a living puppet - a shell of a man. Everything he did was manipulated by the elders of the Ushiromiya family: his actions were theirs, his movements were theirs, his wife, even, was chosen by them, even having children was just another thing the elders likely chose for him. Kinzo, certainly, had never wanted such things. He loathed the name "Ushiromiya" and how it was used to refer to him, and felt he was never his own man. That name, to him, simply signified that he was just a pawn, a puppet, a useless piece on the Ushiromiya family's chessboard, regardless of the titles that had been bestowed upon him. Finally, when the family was falling apart and the elders were ready to curl up and die in retirement, was Kinzo able to flee to the army - not at all planning to start his own life, but merely to cut the strings that bound him so he could find a place to die and be free. Indeed, before meeting Beatrice, this is the kind of man Ushiromiya Kinzo was.

However, this all changed after Kinzo met the Itallian woman known as Beatrice Castiglioni. Upon meeting this woman, everything about Kinzo's life and views seemed to change. Even though he was a married man, it was this woman he met while on a remote island millitary base that changed his views on everything, and it was this woman that first showed him how to "live" and how to love. Beatrice, or Bice as he called her when they were together, soon became his entire world, and he found that with her in his life, he didn't want to die anymore. With this newfound desire to live, Kinzo's world suddenly began to turn upside-down-- He couldn't give up, and he couldn't lose Beatrice. In the most suave, manly way possible, he "kidnapped" her after making it out of a massacre, and proceeded to go on with her for as long as he could until her death, growing more and more in love with her with each passing moment. One might consider this story extremely sweet, if not for the fact this love turned horribly tragic as Kinzo would eventually force this love onto his and Beatrice's motherless daughter... Beatrice.

Though Kinzo, at the point he has been taken from, hasn't truly awakened to/begun to use his complete potential (or madness) yet, Kinzo is a man who could seemingly accomplish anything. Like a phoenix who rose from the ashes of the Ushiromiya family, it is said that with a single bar of gold and his words alone, Kinzo managed to raise the Ushiromiya back from the grave all by himself, increasing his fortune to be ten times what the original family had had. A calm, careful man who never let a chance for victory slip by him, he was a man who was feared by all in the world of business when he was in his prime - being close to that age and power, to say Kinzo at this point in life should be feared would be sound advice indeed.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Kinzo is extremely charismatic, and a born leader. Even though he was born and used as a puppet for most of his life, either despite or because of that experience, upon gaining control of the Ushiromiya family all his own, he ruled it and revived it like no other.
+ His luck seems to know no bounds: despite all odds, from nothing, he can seemingly create gold and revive an empire.
+ Kinzo is very intelligent. Despite being the puppet of the Ushiromiya elders, he still put in time to read and become educated, learning and becoming fluent in multiple languages as well as reading books in those other languages as well.
+ Beyond his intelligence, Kinzo is also quick witted and quite the strategist - he is one of the chess greats later in life, but even now the skills necessary to master the game are still strong in him.
- His thoughts are very Beatrice-centric. He gladly creates a double-life just so he can be with her whenever he can, and once she dies in childbirth later on in his life, he becomes obsessed with her and her image - so much so he raises their daughter as if she were Beatrice reborn, even going as far treating her as a lover and having another child with her, his daughter. At his canon point, however, he is quite literally just starting this Beatrice-centric life.
- He lived as a living puppet for most of his life, and this gives him a great deal of resentment towards the original Ushiromiya family and rich families in general. Rather ironic, given how he will raise his own children and how they will end up feeling towards the "great Ushiromiya family".
+/- Has a strong belief in the power of gambling and fate - at later points in his life, he can and will leave the fate of his and his family's lives to the roll of the die on the assumption there MIGHT be a grand payout. As it happens, thanks to his luck and charisma, this belief has actually almost always paid off for Kinzo.

First Person Sample:
[As the feed starts up, viewers are greeting by the face of a grinning man - his face being a face that might seem hauntingly familiar to some. The grin is hardly a pleasant one, however, but rather one of someone who can't believe what's happening to him. Not quite angry, but more walking between cynical and defeated. Behind him, a Wingull loyally flaps his wings, awaiting some kind of word from his new trainer, but it recieves none. Instead, the man stares into the screen for a moment, as if unsure what to do next, before he shakes his head and continues.]

Tell me. [He pauses, staring at the screen for a moment more. Then he laughs, as if he's gone mad. Might as well.] ... What year is this? It can't possibly be 1944 anymore. [His grin still there, he shakes his head, a low chuckle escaping him.] This kind of technology should be impossible. A device this small that allows me to connect to everyone else in this so-called region? Hah. The only way it could be is if something else impossible has happened. Unless, of course, the more obvious thing happened.

[He looks away from the screen, a forlorn expression replacing the grin - at the sight of this, his Wingull lets out a cry.]

Have the cries of the seagulls of that forsaken island driven me to madness? Have I already been stripped of this life that I was finally granted? Of Bice...?

[Continuing to ignore his Wingull, which he is half-sure is perhaps a hallucination of some kind, he shakes his head and sighs.]

I don't even know if talking to this machine is even really doing any good. [He smirks, chuckly grimly.] Perhaps I've just been wasting my time, standing here talking to it like a fool. [He gives the supposed camera a final, firm look.] ... If this is real, I'd like some information. As much as possible, no matter how trivial.

If not... Hah. I'm no more worse off than I was a few week ago anyway.

Third Person Sample:
It had already been a few days - nearly a week, in fact - since he had left Rokkenjima. The massacre over the gold, "kidnapping" Bice, meeting Doctor Nanjo, and eventually having to return to Odawara without her while she recovered... After all of that time he had spent on the island, praying for death, after he had been granted life by his Golden Witch, it was as if it had happened in the blink of an eye. His life, which he was sure would end at that island, had finally begun.

Ironically, however... It was as though, by some twist of fate, the island was still with him in the form of a strange, seagull creature that had been following him for an hour now. To say that information gathering had been hard would be an understatement, to say the least. Where was he? Who were these people? What were these creatures? They certainly weren't like anything he had ever read about, and he had read many, many books.

Was this some kind of hallucination? Had he been driven to madness? This logic... would make sense, but at the same time... If he was hearing the cries of the island, did that mean he was still there? Did the Itallian submarine never arrive? Was the woman who had given birth to him, after all these years of a dead life, merely a figment of his imagination?

"Of course not!" Kinzo found himself yelling, emotions of all kinds escaping through his voice for the first time since his arrival. Anger, disbelief, concern... No, he couldn't accept something like a hallucination so easily! Beatrice was surely awaiting him in Niijima, waiting to be taken to Odawara - and he was still waiting for her! Each moment without her was simply... What kind of kidnapper was he, to have gone this long without checking on her? Surely, he could manage a telephone call once he figured out the situation...

Though he hadn't realized it, the seagull creature had become quite aggravated. Frowning at it, Kinzo waved a hand at it, as if to shoo it away. He had no time to concern himself with this reminder of Rokkenjima - he would have plenty of time to deal with the gulls of the island when he was on the island, when he was off it they were simply distracting him from Beatrice.

"Would you be quiet?" he finally asked the creature, though he had no doubt in his mind that it would continue squawking about like the annoyance that it was proving it was. Much to his surprise, the bird blinked at Kinzo and obediently silenced itself, even going as far as to settle down on the ground in front of him, as if awaiting further instructions. Despite himself, Kinzo couldn't help but smirk at the attitude of the gull. It reminded him of a certain friend of his. "... In that case, come. we have work to do."

Glad to suddenly be of service, the Wingull gave a cry and rose to shoulder-height, at which point Kinzo nodded - as if saying "this is a good place" - before continuing.

"I don't know what you are, but it seems we're to be some sort of pair. Hallucination, delusion, demon, or just a rare species of intelligent bird that I've had the luck of discovering... Whatever you are, if you wish to accompany me, I won't mind... So long as you don't cause me any problems, that is," Kinzo was firm... with the bird. He supposed it was appropriate, if it was going to be a servant, that he should be. He would question his sanity further later this evening if the bird actually chose to stick around.

And with that, Ushiromiya Kinzo and Gen the Wingull began their journey.
