We're revamping our narthex (fancy church word for lobby) at Redeemer and I had to put in a plug for the youth. Yeah, I know, everyone and their sister is wanting space in the re-design for their ministry and their stuff, so how am I any different? I'll tell you why. No American should ever go to a Japanese doctor. If you're heavier than, say, someone in my family (and Alice, you know how fucking skinny my family is) they will first and foremost blame your problem on your weight.

Break a leg falling down the stairs? Not surprising you lost your balance, given all that blubber.

There may be weight discrimination in the States but the Japanese are a far less healthy culture when it comes to self-image. And they have less of a weight problem than we do.

I know that the first doctor I visited about my hip problems (then thought to be knee problems) did enough to convince me not to go any further with medical help until it got much much worse. I realize a lot of that was my own annoyance getting the better of me, but, yeah.

Thank you for writing this. The Sister at my medical clinic wrote "pre-diabetic" on my chart last month. All my tests came back normal- blood pressure, etc. I am fat. I am NOT a pre-diabetic.
