Loving Husband and I were invited out to eat by a couple at the church. They're an awesome older couple and we were excited about going out with them anyway, but they took us to
Pigall's, a swanky French restaurant downtown. It was probably the best meal we've ever had. It was also, I can safely say, the most expensive meal we've ever had. We went for the 5-course "tasting menu" which was listed as $134.00 per person with wine. Not that we're counting, but that's a lot for four people on a whim.
Anyway, it started with an amuse bouche which I've heard of but never laid eyes on--a tiny cup of corn soup with truffle oil, a little phyllo wrap with duck, herbs, and dried fruits, and a little tiny crab thingy. You wouldn't think that little tiny food would be so good, but damn. Then the weirdest little pomegranate/lobster slaw (yes, I said slaw) for the first course with a paired white wine I can't pronounce. Actually, I didn't recognize the names of any of the wines we had--never heard of them. Anyway, then fois gras with wine and craziness, then something else (at this point, things get hazy from all the awesome). Fourth was the "main course" of venison filet and Kentucky grits (which turned out to be packed with root vegetables and deliciousness). Fifth was dessert--a little tray with two-bites worth of creme brulee, chocolate-hazelnut somethingorother, grapefruit and almond sorbets, and a carrot muffin. Then came coffee and cookies. We stopped short of the cheese tray, as delicious as that sounds, as we just couldn't handle any more.
So, long story short: four-Michelin-star restaurants are everything you hope for, unsurprisingly. Plus, always good if it's on someone else's bill.
