Last night Barbara and myself went to the Mets v. Nationals came, taking the Metro to get there. Our train car had a couple of punks on it that were heading into DC for the anti-war concert that was going on, featuring the Bouncing Souls and Anti-Flag, among others. The trains were packed and one of the young punks noticed my Thrice shirt and started up a conversation. We discussed the Bouncing Souls for a bit and at some point I had said, "when I saw the 'Souls like 10 years ago, they were great, but they were so drunk, and the show was total chaos." That's when I then paused and thought, "holy crap, that makes me sound so old."
The kid I was talking to could not have much older than 15, if older at all. It was truly a step back in time for me... bringing up memories of me and my buddies taking the LIRR into NYC to catch shows all the time. I have seen the 'Souls numerous times since 1995, probably in the area of 15-20, but the image I had of them from one of their shows all those years ago sticks firmly in my head. That's not surprising though, those are definitely the years when we're so impressionable, and as one might imagine, the life the band was leading at the time was a far cry from what I had known. The Bouncing Souls of today barely even resemble the motley, drunken crew they were back then, leaving 40s all over the place, and getting tossed from a variety of tri-state area venues. Getting sober had a seriously incredible influence on the direction of that band, and I'd venture to say it's probably one of the major reasons why they're still playing, instead of entirely self-destructing. Anyway... I hope the kid had a great time.
