I'm really liking what they did with the show so far. It's campy as hell and they changed a bunch of things but I think they did a good job of updating a 90s YA novel into something that could grab viewers from today's generation. Things did really pick up in this episode and I'm excited to see next week's.
One thing I like about this story is that it's not just a romance and a love triangle. There are things going on in the background unrelated to it. I liked that about the books, too. It was never just Elena and Stefan making eyes at each other or Damon and Stefan fighting over Elena. There were subplots that eventually led to the shit hitting the fan and the T.V. show's doing a good job of keeping that happening.
I do like how they're using Damon and I'm really liking this actor's portrayal of the character. He's not how I pictured Damon in the books yet.... he's somehow very Damon. Stefan is really surprising me. I liked Stefan in the books though not quite as much as Damon and weirdly enough, I find myself really liking Stefan a lot more in the T.V. series. Stefan's so manly and it contrasts really nicely with Damon's smarminess. XD I'm loving the way the brothers interact with each other. Their dialogue is so different in the books but when I'm watching, I don't see these two as anyone but the Salvatore brothers.
I'm starting to adjust to Bonnie and though I still think she looks more like Meredith than Bonnie, the actress does a good job of pulling off Bonnie's.... Bonnie-ness. XD; I did read that Meredith has been cast and she is going to be in the series and I'm really eager to see her. With the way things are going, I'm wondering if she's going to be some kind of badass Blade-esque vampire hunter or something. I'm also wondering if they're going to bring her in alongside Alaric. As much as I'm enjoying Mr. Tanner's status as a rocksteady premium douchebag, I will be upset if he doesn't die the bloody, messy death he's supposed to. I really want to see what Alaric will be like in this series. I always thought he should've had more screentime in the books.
I'm really psyched about Katherine. I'm really digging Nina Dobriev's performance as Elena in this show and can't wait to see how she pulls off Katherine. She seems more balanced in the T.V. series than she does in the books. I really hope this show will last long for Klaus to make an appearance at least in a flashback. I liked Klaus, the psychopath. That's a long way off though.
I'm even liking Caroline in this. She's slightly more sympathetic as a character in the TV series than she is in the books. At first, I didn't think she was bitchy enough but after the end of this episode, she's probably going to become a lot bitchier. Caroline sort of has to turn into an uberbitch to keep the main plot moving. XD; As I recall, she wasn't quite as bitchy in the beginning of the novels though I got the impression that Caroline was a little more hardnosed than she's coming across as in the TV series.
I still like how they've expanded Vickie and I'm liking the subplot with her and Elena's brother and Tyler. I'm wondering if they're going to keep Tyler as a werewolf in the TV show, too. I hope so. I'm curious how it would work with this Tyler.
Matt still needs a hug. Poor guy. :/ I'm eager to see how his interactions with Stefan are going to develop. So far, they seem to be keeping Matt as the more or less nice guy he's supposed to be, thank god. Matt could bullheaded and stubborn at times but he was always a good guy. I still go "...what?" over him and Vickie being brother and sister in this though.
And.... that's all I have to say so far which is surprisingly a lot for only two episodes having been aired. XD; More reactions to follow as I have them. I am noticing how it feels like they're trying to one-up Twilight and give a nod toward BtVS though. XD "Jenna Summers" was kind of glaringly obvious, guys. XD;
And really now, I'm done. :D;
