tulliolus for a long ago meme. Thank you for your patience.
She had no time to think, really. She'd already been to her quarters, realizing with just a glance that there was nothing she there she wanted to bring with her...to the past. Walking through the corridors of the Enterprise, trying to avoid soldiers rushing to their battle stations, Tasha found her thoughts drifting to her own past, the one from this timeline. Back to the academy and the girl with the fathomless black eyes. Deanna Troi.
They'd met in an advanced interrogation techniques class. She was a half-Betazoid empath on the fast track to Starfleet Intelligence and Tasha had been captivated by the first smile, by the first shake of her black ringlets when she laughed. For months, they skirted around their blossoming attraction to one another until the night Deanna forced the issue.
Tasha looked up from her perch on the end of the examination table right into dark, worried eyes.
"Are you all right?" asked the bearer of those inky eyes, her exotic accent showing the strain of her concern. A pale hand reached up and cupped Tasha's cheek.
"I'm fine," said the blonde teen darkly as she experimentally twisted her newly healed arm. "Just stupid."
"No!" Deanna leaned forward until their foreheads met. "You're not stupid, Natasha. Commander Palik told us the entire squad would have been killed if not for your actions."
"Sh'aan and Regan are dead, Deanna! I should have--"
Tasha found her mouth stopped by the softest, sweetest kiss--her first ever--and her heart ignited in her chest, drowning out everything but the taste and feel of Deanna Troi. When they parted, the young empath looked up at Tasha from beneath long lashes.
"Have you been released by Dr. Levine yet?" she asked softly, a strange heat licking the edges of her coal black eyes.
Tasha licked her lips. "Y-yes. And I'm excused from classes for two days. She wants me to rest."
Deanna grinned and reached out her hand, entwining her fingers with Tasha's and pulling her off the examination table. "Well, you'll be in bed at least," she said, tugging Tasha out of sickbay and down the corridor, her voice husky in a way that gave the blonde tingles in places she very much enjoyed. "She should give you partial credit for that..."
Three months after that night, a pair of Klingon warbirds decloaked next to and opened fire on Starbase 97, killing 1,311 before two Starfleet warships were able to drive them off. The dead included Deanna Troi and her family, killed aboard a public transport that had docked there briefly to take on additional passengers. The young half-Betazoid had been on her last leave before graduation. Rumor was that Starfleet Headquarters had tapped her for a new elite intelligence department.
Lieutenant Tasha Yar, late of the Enterprise 1701-D, had no illusions; she knew her attraction to Richard Castillo had more to do with a certain dark depth of his eyes than anything else. She also knew that she was chasing paper dragons by transferring to the Enterprise C. What was it that Guinan had said--that she'd died a meaningless death in the corrected timeline? She had no intention of that happening again, whatever the cost. And if she died fighting the Romulans in this battle, maybe she'd get to see Deanna again after all.
As the transporter beam took her, Tasha prayed that Guinan was right about the timeline--that it really could be corrected. And she hoped that Deanna Troi would outlive her there, happy and healthy in a Universe that had never known this war, this devastation.
Whatever the cost.
Hope you enjoyed it!
