So on Thursday she had another appt with the ortho rehab specialist from LA. He isn't very happy with how the leg is recovering. Yes, it has dropped down a hole lot but she is still not using it. She only uses it to hold herself up if I place it down correctly and lift her other hind leg. When she attempts to place it down it is always toes under. What does this mean? It means there is something going on with the nerve to the leg. he seems to think that the nerve is being pinched or bound by all the scar tissue in the hip area. Our options?

One: to take her down to his hospital (our vet refers nerve exploration to him)and have the length of the nerve explored and freed if caught up in the scar tissue. There is no guarantee that this will fix her leg/foot issue, but it is the only way to give it a chance to happen. If we chose this route then it needs to be done sooner then later.

Two: do nothing since she seems to be a happy girl and can get around rather speedily on three legs with the other one just hanging in there.

Three: have the leg amputated so it won't hinder her and there won't be the possibility of her doing the knuckle drag and causing wounds on her toes.

Karen and I both want to talk to our vet a bit more in depth before the decision is made, but finding time to do that during this insane period of the year is very hard. The price tag for the surgery would be anywhere from 1800 to 2200. Dr B (the specialist) is giving us a price break because of Cocoa's story, which is a wonderful thing. Another friend has offered the money for the surgery, which is another amazing thing. Mom's just aren't sure they want to put their baby through another major surgery.

I myself am leaning towards having him try. Any chance for Cocoa to be ab;e to scratch her own right side of the head would be good. Karen isn't sure.

what the hell do we do?

cocoa, surgery, leg., confused
