It's Not a Nightmare

Tip Tuesday... The Geico Road Race 12k or how I overcame my fears

What was a nightmare 6 months ago became a reality this past Saturday... and it didn't upset me in the slightest.

The Geico Road Race was a nice 12K course. The website said 1 major hill but I beg to differ. There were several. I started in the back of the pack and took off on my merry way. I reached the point where the 5Kers turned around and I kept going on the 12K course. I had fun waving at the firefighters, cops and volunteers... and then at mile three I realized that I had company. I looked over my left shoulder and there it was... the cop car.

For those of you who don't know what the cop car means let me put it out there... I came in dead last... not just in the 12K but in the entire race series

Seriously, I was the last time recorded for the Geico Race Series. But thankfully they kept the finish line open for me and waited for my arrival. And finish I did. My Official race time was 1:43:45. By garmin calculations the course was a bit short so I kept running past the finish line to finish out the 7.5 miles. Garmin time was 1:45:___ (Something)

Official Race Review

Once again this is a smaller middle Georgia race which I love. Total there were probably about 400 runners between the 5K and 12K. The course was very peaceful (even the hills). I really enjoy seeing new parts of Macon on foot and this one did not disappoint.

I did not partake in the water stops but I remember seeing 2. I took the Camelbak with me so that I could keep my hand free. The split callers were nice and even the cops that followed me were very encouraging.

Post race refreshments were typical: bananas, oranges, bagels, water. They may have had more but that is what was on the table when I got there. Even being the last person in, there was still plenty of food.

Obviously I did not win any awards but the hardware was ginormous. Anyone who places received a nice trophy to take home.

My only disappointment is that the Geico gecko was supposed to be at the finish line to greet the runners but there was no gecko in sight. At first I thought it was just because I finished late but later found out the gecko didn't make it. The Piggly Wiggly pig did make and appearance but lets face it... I am not exactly fond of Piggly Wiggly. So the pig wasn't a highlight for me.

Overall if my only disappointment was not seeing a larger than life mascot... the day went pretty damn well.
