[You wake up on a bunk bed in what appears to be a military style barracks. Currently, there is no one around. As soon as you step out of bed, however, an unseen projector clicks on and a film begins to play on the wall in front of you. A montage of a canyon and two military bases flashes on screen, and a narrator is heard.]
Greetings new recruit, and welcome to Blood Gulch Outpost Number one. You have been hand selected by our panel to participate in the exciting conclusion of years of military research. This is a great honor, as I am sure you can infer, and we are certain you are grateful to be given the chance to take part in it.
During your stay in Blood Gulch, you will be taking part in numerous training exercises and competitions as part of one of the teams stationed here. If you look at your bunk, you will find a sign attached to the end of it with your name and assigned team. Please remember that teams are subject to change should the proper conditions arise.
Your objective as a soldier here at Blood Gulch is to accomplish each mission given to you with the poise and dedication expected from someone in your position. Each mission accomplished by your team will earn our team points, and whichever team reaches the maximum amount of points first will be released from their duties and sent home. The losing team will have their point value reset, and another team will be brought in to replace the team that has left, restarting the simulation. The purpose of this is to show us how successfully our experimental equipment and tactics can be executed by regular soldiers in battle.
To aid you in your competitions and make your stay here more comfortable, you have been given a few basic supplies that can be found in the trunk at the end of your bunk. Your trunk contains the following items:
⇨ A fully outfitted wash kit, complete with any necessities one might need to keep up personal hygiene.
⇨ Familiar clothing sets and shoes from your previous home.
⇨ Any medication you need to function properly, if applicable.
⇨ A basic training manual containing a map of the area, your base, and a description of the basic equipment assigned to your person.
⇨ A card key to the armory that is only able to be used by someone on your team.
⇨ Identification dog tags to assist in identification if you are K.I.A.
⇨ Your vital monitoring location bracelet, which we recommend putting on right away for your safety.
⇨ Any valuable or sentimental items you keep on your person back in your home, such as pictures, jewelry, or miscellaneous weapons.
We hope the inclusion of these items will help make your stay much more pleasant.
One of the items included in your kit should become your most important possession while at this outpost. This is your vital monitoring location bracelet, or VMLB for short. While worn, this bracelet will monitor your vital signs and report any significant changes to the monitor of this installation, as well as your team medic. This is for your safety and comfort. The VMLB also reveals your location in the canyon to your teammates who are also wearing their VMLBs, as well as allows you to locate any of your teammates at any given time using the built in radar found under the face of the bracelet. The top face also functions as a watch, if you should need it.
The bracelet is built with an alarm that will sound for one of three reasons:
⇨ If there is an announcement that needs to be made by the monitor of this installation, your bracelet will emit a specific pattern to alert you to this. The alarm will only shut off once you have met at the designated meeting place in the middle of the canyon for the announcement.
⇨ If you are severely injured or killed, your bracelet will begin to sound, making you easier to be found by your teammates.
⇨ If a teammate is injured or killed within the immediate vicinity, your bracelet will pick up the change in vitals and emit a similar sound, alerting you to your teammate's situation. Also, their dot on the radar will change from green to yellow, orange, or red, depending on their condition.
You will not be allowed to participate in any event without your VMLB, and your VMLB is only able to be removed by you. No teammate or opposing teammate will be able to remove your VMLB under any circumstances.
I hope we have not scared you away by the mention of death and injuries in Blood Gulch. Since this is a military training simulation, these are scenarios that are expected, but they are not final.
If a solider is killed inside or outside of battle, their VMLB beacon will alert any nearby teammates to their situation, as well as the team medic. All your teammates must do is find your body and press the small button on the side of your bracelet labeled 'Respawn'. This button will only work if your vitals are nonexistent. Once the respawn button is pressed, you will be transported instantly back to your bunk at the base, and will be revived and ready for duty!
If a soldier is injured, do not fret. The medicine and training given to the medics will be extremely advanced and effective; even the most crippling of injuries, when treated correctly, will fix themselves within a few days. If your team is without a medic, the monitor will visit your base to help you in your situation.
Regarding injuries and death outside of battle; if they are caused by accident, it is a tragic occurrence, but one where nothing can be done. However, if it is purposefully caused,
either by a teammate or an opposing teammate, points will be deducted from the offender's team for their actions. Repeating offenses will result in larger amounts of points being lost.
This facility and the environment surrounding it are designed to function similar to a military base in an actual conflict. Your base is designed and constructed with a combat situation in mind; the walls and structure are fortified to withstand even the most powerful of attacks, and the top of the base is fitted with several walls and barriers to be used in a firefight. You will also find a transporter on top of your base, which, when stepped into, will teleport you instantly to a spot in the middle of the canyon.
The main interior of the base is open, with no protective doors or barricades to be used. This is due to the Capture the Flag and Assault game types, where the objective is to infiltrate the enemy base to accomplish your mission. However, the living areas of the bases are below ground, and those areas are barricaded by impenetrable doors which can only be accessed by members of that base's team.
The living areas of the bases contain two sets of barracks - one female, one male - complete with bunk beds and trunks to keep your possessions in.There are two shower areas, one for each sex, and one large common area for teammates to gather. Inside the base you will also find a small mess hall, with food made fresh daily and snacks available at certain hours. There is also a large gym which houses work out equipment for your personal use, as well as an open area for leisurely games. The armory is the final area in the living area of the base, and is only accessible during competitions.
The armory contains your needed weapons and equipment for the current fight, as well as your customized armor to be worn during competitions.
If you venture outside of the base, you will find yourself in the middle of a beautiful, red rock boxed canyon. The vegetation here is somewhat minimal, and the wildlife is fairly nonexistent, but the area is beautiful nonetheless. Across the canyon you will find your opposing base, which is structured similarly to yours.
That's all for now, new recruit! If you have any comments or questions, I'm sure your fellow teammates will be willing to assist you. Enjoy your stay, and we look forward to observing your progress.
