so my new jobbie. it's with an organization called
aace educational services talent search. (aace = asian american communities for education.) so, hella long acronym. it's funded by
jcyc (japanese community youth council) and it's a
trio program (fed money from the us dept of education). their main focus is low income youth who would be the first in their families to attend college. while the agency isnt picky about the youth they serve, there are certain grant requirements that need to be met by serving those particular kids.
my official title is "middle school educational advisor". my duties include running an academic after school program at a middle school. the program that i worked with during the year was enrichment based, this new jobbie focuses on academic achievement - so the basis is mostly homework help and academic-ish structured activities. during the day i'll be in the school giving presentations about the program, it's services, high school and college education... as well as arranging educational field trips for the school (college campus tours, museums, and the like).
this is what i know, so far. the great news is that i'll be at the same middle school i was at during americorps, which is awesome. makes the transition easier, plus i get to see some of my kids from last year. whoo!! day 1: august 13. school starts: august 27. so... about a month away - ack! but overall, pretty excited to get a great opportunity like this. i know im going to learn a lot and help a lot and make an impact. plus hang out with some pretty cool kids. really looking forward to more middle school!
next week is last week of summer camp. im glad and sad at the same time. so it goes, so incredibly fast. i'll miss the kids, they are so awesome.
but the silver lining: im going to mexico! i have a little bit of time between summer camp and the new job, best to make use of that, no? here's to what will be a fun, exciting summer vacation in mazatlan!
