When we talk about where we are going to canvass in a general sense we call it "The Community." Every evening when we come back in from the community someone will yell "Did you all have a beautiful day in the community?!" Today? Was a weird day in the community.
Weird happenstance 1:
So I ring a doorbell and a nice lady comes out, very soccer mom, all smiles and L.L. Bean shirt. She asks what I'm about and smiles and nods until I get to "Yeah so NYPIRG has been around for 37 years now and lobbied through some great stuff starting with the Freedom of Information Act..." at which point her face just SHUT DOWN. Seriously, I have never in my life seen someone go from smiling to...not even angry...just completely blank, so fast in my life. Then, in a very quiet monotone, she said "You are a leftist liberal. You can get off my porch now." I was surprised for, you know, a lot of reasons, but kind of stammered out "Um...I'm actually not?" but she just kept staring and all she would say was "Get off my porch," in that same creepy, even monotone. So I did. I mean, most people on my friends list legitimately are kinda leftist liberals but...the Freedom of Information Act? Is that really that liberal? Am I doing this whole being a moderate thing wrong?
Weird happenstance 2:
This one is EVEN CREEPIER. So I start to walk up to this house and hear a buzzing noise. I look down at the front walk and see two dead rabbits. These were not wild rabbits, they were someone's pets, long haired and white, just splayed out dead on the front walk with flies all over them. And, you know, THEIR EYES GOUGED OUT. No one answered the door. I was pretty relieved.
