Reflections on a journey

Given that the price of fuel has reached exorbitant heights, last Friday I decided to drive 700+ miles to see Danni in Charleston (Hey! We are all insane in our own little ways.). It was a good weekend for my diesel fetish. First fill-up of the tank in my 2002 VW Jetta TDI was in Newark, Delaware. I didn't have to fill it again until some 700 miles later in Charleston, South Carolina. On the return trip, my fuel gauge chimed in I-295 in southern New Jersey. That works out to about 50 miles to-the-gallon! How sweet it is!

On the return to south Jersey on Sunday afternoon, I had a near run-in with a bolt of lightning. There were a roving band of insidious little thunderstorms in the Carolinas on Sunday. At the outer edge of one, while driving north on I-95, I was making a pass around a slower car in the right lane. During this time my eyes were trained on the said car. Beyond the car was a stand of trees that you commonly see along interstates in the east. Just as I was beginning to pass the car, a finger of light landed among the trees, followed by a massive snap. The lightning damn near blew all the leaves off the trees. Needless to say that I was startled. It was fascinating, though. I wonder if I'd like to do some lightning photography...hmmmm...
