Compiling...

While my code is busy compiling, I figure I should stop to update this here journal.

I had a brief talk with my new manager this morning. I managed to get him somewhat excited over the prospect of using evolution for "black magic" engineering problems - very much like the ones we will be facing in this new group I find myself at work. My new manager is heading up the newly chartered, "Advanced Network Group." Yes folks, networks, though an old and established field, still has lots of problems burdening it. Computer networks have had too many assumptions built into them by overwhelmed engineers over many years. It would be wise to avail us to the possibility of tweaking the multitude of knobs present, and begin building intelligent systems. One must recognize that networks are more than just about data communication. One can call basically anything a network, so there's a broad range of applicability. And yes, it is very much a "black art." More and more, as time goes on, designing next generation systems is becoming an exercise in uncertainty management. Things are getting really complicated, and what we are producing and dubbing "complex," pales in comparison to the complexity of biology. Your entire genome - the very substance that defines you as an organism - can fit onto a CD-ROM. As I've pointed in the past to Danni, how many CD-ROMs does Microsoft Office come on? Something's wrong in engineering, and I'm smiling.

Hell, my code is still compiling...
