Unfortunately, I have not had many hours at work lately. This has given me lots of time to focus on my two big projects for the next few months:
- Find a Career Job
- Buy a House
I am far more interested in house buying, since I have essentially been failing at the whole career thing since moving to Pittsburgh. However, as I work on the budget planning of house-buying it is becoming ever more apparent that my first step has to be the less-fun one.
What I have successfully done is some figuring out of what it is I want to be doing. As much as I loved news production*, I am wary of an industry not likely to last the 40 years from now until my retirement. I am looking instead towards other media production, or failing that communications or media/public relations. I have spent the last year and a half applying for jobs I found, with (clearly) no positive returns. My new goal is to go after the jobs that don't get posted. I am working on building connections to try and meet people. All I have done so far is make a list of companies I want to target. Step 2 will be to find out who at those companies has the power to hire me, and then try to get in contact with them, after I figure out what to say.
I would like to post links to some of the houses in my area that I've scoped out online, places I'm pretty excited about. BUT, I know the job stuff has to come first, and I don't know if any of the places on the market now will still be available in a few months when we can really start looking.** I am getting really excited to start looking though, and to find a place that I can really fix up.
* I am listening to the morning news as I write this. Even though it's almost two years since I worked the morning news shift, I still look up as if I'm supposed to be working when I hear Al Roker do the national-to-local toss, "Here's what's happening in your neck of the woods." Also, I absolutely love watching it get brighter outside.
** We can't sublet our current place, so to avoid paying for two places at once, we will need to close on our new place in mid-July, which means going under contract 30-90 days beforehand. Before that we will need to get pre-approved for a mortgage, and figure out exactly what we're going to be looking for in terms of how much of a fixer-upper we're willing/able to take on, etc.
