Camping Pictures

Jim and I are back from our camping trip! It was fun but extreemly exhausting.

Jim packing and organizing on Wednesday morning

Do Not Drink! The fuel looked like water, so I had to mark the bottle.

At the diner as we were heading out.

Mt. Greylock as we approached it

I'm smiling because we haven't started walking uphill yet.

Jim, ready and rearin' to go

Jim making breakfast the next morning

Me having breakfast on my birthday!

Taking a break on the trail. This is actually during the time that we were lost, but we didn't know it yet.

Me, when we finally got up to the top.

It was actually an access road. We had to go about 15 more feet up the side to get to the summit.

A picture from inside the tower on top of the mountain, the very highest point in Massachusetts.
Part of a series of 8 that I took from each window. The rest are in my photobucket album.

a topographical map of the mountain area

the same picture, with our course highlighted.
The green dot is where we left the car.
The yellow line is our path the first day.
The yellow dot is where we slept the first night (as illustrated by Jim)
The blue line was our path the second day, including where we accidentally followed the appalician trail in the wrong direction for a while.
The blue dot is where we slept the second night, by a waterfall.
The red line is our path the third day, in the rain.

The lodge on top of the mountain

Jim eating lunch

Our lunch was PB+J squeezed onto crackers left over from smores, granola bars, gushers and grape kool-aid

aww

After the lodge we hiked to our new campsite, which turned out to be overlooking a waterfall. Jim was intrigued...

...and hopped right in. He actually rinsed under the falling water, but my legs were shaking and I didn't want to risk my camera with the water and the rocks.

The woods on this side of the mountain were very pretty. About half of the leaves had changed very brightly, making the forest floor gorgeous.

We put the tent inside the backpackers shelter since it looked like rain.

It was so nice to be done walking for the night

Two goofy kids making dinner

Jim made chicken soup and an alfredo pasta with broccoli and bacon, very warm and filling. We couldn't carry heavy food, so it was all dried or from instant packets.

Building our campfire. It was one of the few things we did that broke the "take only pictures, leave only footprints" rule. Luckily we were able to throw out our first days trash at the summit lodge.

Smores and hot chocolate instead of birthday cake!

Jim thinks this one looks like his soul is leaving his body.

Rainy day the next morning. This is the last picture I took because I didn't want to dig in the pack's rain-cover for the camera during the walk back.

So, that was our camping trip. There are more pictures in my photobucket album. They go in reverse order, from latest to earliest.

After we got back today we showered, rested a bit, and then Jim took me out to a birthday dinner at our favorite noodle place in Amherst. Then we got me a cannoli, and got the Office and Lost on dvd and spent the whole night watching those. They're both pretty good.
Ah well, now it's back to the real world.
