Thinking About History

Feb 06, 2010 17:57

The more I think about it, the more bugged I get that the history we're taught about in schools is mostly about old white dudes. (And when you do learn about Canada's First Nations, it's pretty much exclusively about their lifeways prior to European contact, and there's often very little sense that they continued to exist, and still exist today)

So, anyway, here's a little bit about a historical figure I found out about a few months back.

Rose Fortune:

She and her family escaped from slavery in Virginia and came to Nova Scotia. There she grew up and started her own business, became the first female police officer in Canada (in fact she founded the police department in her town of Annapolis Royal), and helped with the Underground Railroad.

canada, history, canadian history
