In one of my classes, we're focusing on globalization, tourism and sex workers in the Dominican Republic this week. The following is a quote from chapter four of this book, in a paragraph describing the typical variety of personal belongings a sex worker might have in her room:

"Those who can read often have Dominican comic book versions of Harlequin Romances strewn about their rooms. These small books, made out of cheap paper, cost only a few pesos each and can be traded in for others at the newspaper and school supplies store in Los Charamicos. Aside from newspapers from time to time (usually bought by the bar owner), these romances are the only form of reading the women undertake."

Just thought I'd share that for interest's sake.
