[Because someone else can have their day ruined for once.]

That certainly "shortens it up" a great deal, at the exclusion of other pertinent pieces of information. For instance, where exactly is this Mayfield?

[God like her day hasn't been ruined already]

Figurin' somewhere smack in th' middle of th' United States, or least it's lookin' tha' way.

Another gentleman also said that. It certainly does look like the United States.

You said we're stuck here. Is there a quarantine or other military blockade of some sort in effect?

Nah, I'm meanin' we're stuck here since there's not a way out.

Say ya walk yerself to one side of th' town, and ya end up on th' other. Sorta overlaps it's self.

[Not that he sounds concerned about this.]

[Skeptically] So the very fabric of space in this town is overlapped....?

[Notices this and is instantly suspicious 8| 8| 8|]

That does not seem to bother you.

Guess if ya wanna get technical, somethin' like tha'.

[Loooong pause.]

Not really.

What could be the reason for that? Even those in small towns who never leave their place of birth would be outraged to know some external power is preventing them from ever doing so.

M'sure they would. Don't see much of a point gettin' all worked up when everyone else is doin' a beauty of a job of it.

Then you simply do not care about your situation, or are you pleased and content with the location?

'd hardly say pleased.
