No robot. Radio Shack closes early on Sunday, and apparently I pitched the one (or perhaps 2) power transistors I had.
So I hooked up my 2 XBee modules and demonstrated that they can work like a modem. This was mainly challenging because the tiny pins on the XBees make them almost impossible to solder wires to. They won't fit onto a breadboard. By the time I was done, I was starting to think that paying an extra $3 apiece to get a breakout board would be worth it.
