Mom/New Babies Vet Visit

Well it's been a rough few days. My mom had what they think is a TIA which is basically like a mini stroke. Her face on the left was pulling down, her speech was slurred, and her left leg wouldn't work. She's ok now. Actually she was ok within a few minutes of the episode. By the time the paramedics got there she was completely fine and didn't want to go with them. The only way the guy convinced her was telling her she could either go with him to the hospital or she could go to a nursing home.

Basically a TIA is a warning. She's very lucky she didn't have a full blown stroke. They have run many tests on her and can't find the cause. They have one more procedure they want to do on her but she gets to come back to day surgery to do that. There is one more place there could be a blockage. So she's been in the hospital for two days and I'm hoping she is leaving now. They were supposed to be getting her discharge stuff together when I called earlier this morning.

Her cholesterol is borderline so they want her to take a cholesterol pill now and also an aspirin a day to prevent this from happening again. I almost hope they do find a blockage when they do that procedure so then we'll know what caused it. Otherwise from what I know of what I've learned it class, it could have just been a small piece of the plaque in the arteries that broke off and floated in the blood and clogged up somewhere for a few minutes. But I guess if she gets her cholesterol down and therefore the plaque down, maybe that won't happen again.

I took my new ferrets to the vet on Wednesday. It was quite an ordeal. I really like my vet all around but I was really quite peeved that day.

First of all when she got a hold of Mako (my deaf really bitey one), of course Mako tried to maul the vet. They were laughing and carrying on which was fine and then she popped her on the nose which I am TOTALLY against. Then when Mako latched onto her lab jacket somehow while this was going on they were close to the edge. Well I worried about her falling and I was like no they wouldn't let her fall. THEY DID. She hit that hard floor. I was so PO'd! She is thankfully ok though. All this would be enough to make me switch but she really is an AWESOME exotics vet and I have been through several vets that told me wrong stuff and she has actually come back and either cured them when they couldn't or saved me tons of money from wrong procedures. So whereas I used to have 3 different vets for everyone, now I use her for everything.

Poor Mako got a "will bite" sticker put in her chart. It was kind of funny but kind of not.

So anyway besides all that I talked to her about the ADV testing. She doesn't even do it. She said that she has never seen or heard of a case in this area, nor has she heard of Marshall's ever having a ferret come out of there with it, which for non-ferret people, that's where most ferrets come from and where my babies came from.

So anyway, I decided not to try to do that since she doesn't do it there. Then I asked about testing for ECE. I just thought it was a simple fecal test. Not so. She's never tested for that either so she was gone for about 20 minutes trying to find a lab that would test for it. She found one in Michigan. Now I'm wondering if that wasn't a waste of money. The people that told me to test for it I think were mostly in the UK which I realized after the fact. I think it's a big thing over there. I'm guessing it's not too prevalent over here. But oh well so waiting on that to come back.

But she did find they had coccidia so I'm SO HAPPY I quarantined. It was only 3 days of meds thankfully and so I finished up last night. I guess Monday when I get home from clinicals I will get a poo sample and run it by and see if they are in the all clear. Then if they are and the ECE thing comes back good, I'm putting all my babies together. I CAN'T WAIT.

I also ran a poo sample by there yesterday from Hercules. I asked her while I was there if he had ever been tested and I guess I never took a poo sample in because she said no. I wanted to get him tested because he periodically gets mushy poo and I have to give him some Kaopectate to fix it. Luckily it all came back negative for any of that stuff so my other three are all fine.

Oh and I was so aggravated when I got home Thursday. I paid TWO DAY shipping on that playpen so I could hurry up and get it so my new babies would have somewhere else to play besides that cage. I was really worried about this when I ordered it because it looked too good to be true. I mean 11.00 and something for a play pen with a cover. I must have been tired or something. But Rob looked at the page and he said it was misleading too. He said he would have thought it was the whole thing. I mean why didn't they put in bold by the description "cover only, pen not included". Gee wouldn't that have been helpful. I looked all over the place trying to figure out if it was just the pen or just the cover or what and it appeared to me to be the whole thing. Well not so. It was only the cover. So now I'm basically out like 20 + bucks because I'm not buying the pen part to go with it because it's almost 50 dollars. I will only really NEED it for another week. I mean it would be handy later but I just don't need to spend anymore money. So it was 8 something to send it back. I'm out the two day shipping I paid so basically when they refund me, I think I might get 2 of my dollars back. So frustrating.

I'm so happy it's the weekend. I'm not gonna do much today. I'll study tomorrow. I've gotten all my animals taken care of and I'm about to get a shower and curl up in bed and read The Help. I waited two months to get it form my library because everyone is wanting to read it now. I just got it yesterday :)
